Default ISP warned me about downloading copyrighted torrents

My ISP just called me to give me a warning about me downloading some copyright material from a torrent. They said they recieved a complaint, and have a three strike rule so the third time I'm caught they're terminating my account.

I'm in Canada and use bitcomet to download things. I'm guessing my ISP will probably be monitoring my activity more closely now and want to know how I can respond without having to curtail my internet activity.

Is there anyway I can encrypt torrent downloads or take any precautions to hide/muddle the files that I am downloading so that my ISP or the owner company can't track me and see who the downloader is?

You could always rent Seedbox or such and download the torrents there and then DL with FTP to your computer Also there are some programs i beleive which can crypt the connection so the ISP can't see what the data really is.

    Correct me if im wrong

I'd like to hear from anyone that has actually got terminated... Just think about how many people download torrents, and how much $$$ ISP's would lose if they terminated everyone

First of all, ask them to identify the torrent file in question and ask for a copy of the rights holder complaint.

If they can, it was probably a studio/rights holder who complained.
If not, then they are being bitchy about the bandwidth so tell them to not bother you if you are paying for unlimited bandwidth and no one has filed a formal complaint. You can tell them you are downloading ubuntu iso's as far as they are concerned.

well use private torrent trackers cuts alot of the threat down. also if your on demonoid dont use torrents labeled external, dont download from new poeple , certainly dont download the latest movie from a public tracker with 7000 seeds.

the encryption really doesnt do a thing for not letting them know your using bitttornet , it helped with sand vine technology were they were are traffic shaping. they still can see its bittorrent traffic. How you were caught was you downloaded a torrent that was monitored or uploaded by the enemy. Once your connected they have your ip. they reverse look up the ip an send off the complaints to the isps.

    Get into some PRIVATE TRACKERS.

didn't demonoid get shutdown for X/ amount of months last year (might of been 07 ) due to some canadian copyright music infringment.

They manage to shut down one of the biggest torrent sites on the net,

Canada sure does have tough restrictions on copyright EH? (sorry couldn't help it ) :P

What about Peer Guardian and TOR at the same time?

I am actually curious about this myself. After reading a suggestion online I started using peer guardian when dl'ing torrents, but I don't know much about it?

    Anyone?

I was also warned when the 'Bourne Ultimatum' came out. I haven't heard from them since though. I told them someone must have been piggybacking on my wireless connection.

Just pay for a decent newsgroup provider e.g. NewsHosting.com, get an account with Newzbin. Done.

Torrents are painfully slow, and too dodgy.

With 50 connections (they rarely check if you "overclock" your connections) I can get about 6 - 10Mb/s - whereas, if I was grabbing a torrent, it would generally be < 1Mb/s

    Best $15 a month I spend

    Cheers!

I found this on preventing ISP warnings. Not sure on it's accuracy or effectiveness. Comments or additions by those of you who can add to it would be appreciated.

    Code:
    http://blog.bitcomet.com/versant/post_42610/
    Code:

    1. Do your Research !

Find out the policies and reputation of your isp (google it). For example verizon has an excellent privacy policy and motto vs comcast which has been the cause of many isp warnings.

    2. Encrypt your Connection

The majority of torrent applications have built in encryption ability. See this link to find out how to encrypt your torrents for the majour torrent utilities. "http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-encrypt-bittorrent-traffic/"

    3.Download peer guardian.

Peer Guardian is designed by pheonix labs, it blacklists isps of known anti p2p persons, agents, companie, etc. It's in no way fullproof but it's in good hands and a great preventative step. See this link: "http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/"

    4. Proxy your IP!

Enlist the services of a good, high quality proxy. One that I have located with many varous plans to meet any budget and only the finest quality (paypal enabled). I prefer pay because u dont want to sacrafice quality when it comes to safety.

i). Secure Tunnel- Pay proxy server with plenty of features. Effective for personal use, when your Internet activities are not involved in web site development, mass form submitting, etc. The best solution for most of Internet users. Ultimate protection of privacy - nobody can find out where you are engaged in surfing. Blocks all methods of tracking. Provides an encrypted connection for all forms of web browsing, including http, news, mail, and the especially vulnerable IRC and ICQ. Comes with special totally preconfigured software.

ii). Proxy Way Pro - multifunctional anonymous proxy surfing software which you can use together with a wide variety of web applications (web browsers, Instant Messengers, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), etc.) to ensure your anonymity. ProxyWay Pro provides an extended proxy management system that enables you to search for, check proxy (multithreaded proxies checking), analyze, validate proxy servers for speed, anonymity, type (HTTP/HTTPS/SOCKS), geographical location, create proxy chains. Allows update proxy list automatically using scheduler. ProxyWay Pro lets you clear history, block ads and popups, change User-Agent and Referrer fields, block harm code and much more. Also it can be used as a simple local proxy server.

    5. Encrypt your downloads !

And and all sensitives or legally questionable data should be encrypted (you can never be to safe). Truecrypt is a free encryption service that is tried, tested and true. You can encrypt a file or a whole hard drive/partition. You can encrypt with up to 3 of the worlds top encryption algorithems used by FBI, CIA, etc. You can use them all together in a cascade of protection and even create a hidden file, or emcrypt your operating system. To see more copy and paste the following link: "http://www.truecrypt.org/"

    Other Advice

    Be AWARE and PROACTIVE.

When it comes to torrent downloading know the laws of your province/state/country, and know them well. Know how they apply to you and how much sequrity you will need (a hardware encrypter might be neccesairy) .

    a) Surf on ssl encrypted websites like isohunt

    b) Use a router with a built in firewall

    c) Know your network and know your settings, make sure ports are forwarded properly

    d) Get a firewall with packet encryption

It seems to me that allot of people leech is because uploading comes at a higher risk, take any one of these precations, or all of them and feel secure uploading. Torrents survive on the prospect of sharing, if we fail to do or part to share then we are dooming that system which we love to destruction. I upload at up to 95 kB/s and thats my max. Do your part and do as much as you can, but take these precations first and be a seeder!

To be frank, I want to bypass these ISP imposed restrictions WITHOUT spending any money, because if I wanted to spend anything I wouldn't be dl-ing torrents in the first place. The only thing I'm ok spending some money on is quality proxies since those will be necessary for blackhat operations anyway. I'm going to do some more research on the subject and compile a guide on this matter.

Probably. The ISP's can see if you are using a large amount of bandwidth, i.e you're moving large files through their network. If they cared enough, if you have been warned for example, they could peer into where that data is coming from. They probably don't care unless special interests contact them about you. (if you get a warning) A lot of these music/tv/game interest groups will upload honey pot files all over the net for you to download and them to log your IP's by. I'm sure there are a few of those on rapid share as well.

Far better idea, torrents are way too easy to police go for newsgroups and your at the top of the feeding chain anyway whats on torrent sites in 12 hours from now will be on usenet now.

No ratios, no way of people (other than your isp ... unless you pay a few extra $ and get an ssl connection) knowing what your downloading and far less hassle

I did ask them about the complaint. Apparently it was recieved by the publisher of a game, they even gave me the title of it (though an incorrect one).
