I like to mix it up personally. When I've worked in house, I've really found it hard being sat in the same spot all day.
I think the best thing is to work for a couple of hours in one spot, eventually get distracted and instead of mucking about online, go for a wander, ie do this:
- work from home
- go to office at lunch
- pop to a cafe around 4 or 5pm for another hour
If you're having a big day, then work from home again in the evening.
This assumes everything is nearby though - it becomes inefficient if you've got to travel far.
I also have a different set up which means I can work in the environment which suits me best:
Home = big 27 inch iMac and speakers = good for designing and setting up new sites with image editing, creating videos etc
Cafe = 14 inch (Fedora) Thinkpad = good for sitting and concentrating on writing articles or writing content for the website, or browsing forums. Minor code tweaking too. Sometimes general scheming with a pen and paper. General stuff.
Office = iMac + 24 inch AOC monitor and big headphones = good for extensive coding sessions, checking analytical data
For me working from home works just fine, but I can see why some can't do it - too many possible distractions. Personally I counter it with headphones and music - yet another thing some won't do then IMing or just generally working online. This all just comes down to personal preferences.
