Move to US and study there

Hey guys!

I am thinking - and thats only thinking atm - of moving to US. Uni bores the fuck out of me here already and going on somewhere abroad and stay there would really get it going again. So I got a few questions before I can go on with thinking about it:

I want to move to a nice lookin, clean city, with okish crime rate and stuff you know. There should be a nice technical university which isnt off the hook expensive to study at for a guy from Europe.

- What city is like the one described above?
- How many k$/semester am I looking at for studying at its university?
- What other things should I know?

I am tending to move there for a long time rather than just trying it out for a year, but I am not sure about that either of course.

Come to Chicago!!! Currently I study nights at IIT (Illinois Institute of Technology) financial aid is available, they will work with you on payments, its really a good school. Price varies greatly on how much you make yearly, but can get just as cheap as any other technical school of this caliber in the area, especially after their financial department helps you. Just a thought.... Good luck whatever happens!

I'll 2nd whodi. Not because I know anything about technical schools, but because Chicago is the shit.

Plus the fact that we are so culturally diverse that no matter where you are from in Europe, you will find a part of the city that makes you feel at home.

Haha damn you beat me to it, but yeah as cucr3 said Chicago is a great city if you are European and can afford it. Its full of Europeans and so on so it would be a good choice to make the transition easier, since after all the US is a LOT different than Europe haha. Where are you from in Europe btw if you dont mind sharing?

Austria huh??? That is great as Chicago has the only 2 Julius Meinl (Austrian based Coffee Shop/Roaster) Cafes in the USA!!! Im always there doing IM. It will make you feel at home!

This is like the worst time to move here...we're in a depression. The other day it was announced that in California, State tax refunds will not be issued and that next month, they're cutting off all welfare payments indefinitely. This is just the beginning.

^Depends. Now is a great time to move, because you can basically have your choice of where you want to live for how much you want to pay (within reason, obviously). Landlords and banks are so desperate to unload their properties that all negotiating terms will be in your favor.

Well Europe is not far behind, in a global economy once the US goes into depression do you really think the rest of the world will not be affected? We are all equally screwed lol.

I live close to Chicago and really enjoy the city, but screw Chicago. I say go where it is warm. Southern Florida maybe, but definitely not California. I can't barely wait for it to float off in the ocean and become a part of another country. Unfortunately, it just won't happen in my lifetime. Too bad.

I highly doubt anybody in the world would be sorry for moving to the US. Hell, we have to protect our borders to keep people out. Almost every American I have ever spoken to had absolutely no desire to live anywhere but in the US. Sure, some US citizens move but most never even consider such a dumb idea. By the way, I have been in Canada. IMO, not much above Mexico.

Actually it will benefit the US, with these student imports, they will spend money in the US, thus benefiting the economy. But for a international student to get a job in America, it would be pretty dam hard.

Would you rather him move to Canada? I've been all over Canada. Its about as much of a shit hole as Mexico is (excluding Cancun which is AWESOME).

You have a huge amount of choices when moving to the U.S. I think its important for you to first you need to decide some stuff. America is the most diverse place in the world. So think about what kind of weather you would like, food you like, entertainment you enjoy, etc. Then you'll be able to make a more informed decision. I've traveled all over this country to every corner of it and it has anything you want or could think of.

And don't listen to liberal trash like Micheal Moore (i.e. luke82817 or Jimmy_James). America only sucks for lazy people.

I strongly urge you to reconsider. I hold dual citizenship. I lived in the US for 10 years, 2 years ago I moved back home to Russia and have never looked back. Of course this is just my personal opinion, but its coming from someone that is a US citizen, and chooses not to live there. That's all I have to say.

I've traveled all over the PLANET, and no, the US does not have "everything you want or could think of". Again, what experience do you have with other countries to make claims like that?

I dunno about that. The US has been non-stop borrowing money to fund it's massive consumption for the past 10-15 years, and now has a huuuuuge debt on many levels, that most people with half a braincell know can not be repaid in anything less than a few decades, if not more.
Once it all tanks, there will probably be a consumption vacuum, China will have nowhere to ship half of their crap, India will have none to provide their services to, and so on. But eventually people will realize that they are, in a way, better off. Now they have lots of money to spend since nobody is funding the $3+ trillion per year consumption the US has, that money will go elsewhere. The vacuum will eventually be filled by Europeans and Asians.

But I agree that in the short term everybody is a bit screwed. In the long term it's the US that is screwed, big time.
