My wife's Bosses Bosses Boss wants me to build a Website, with 6 pages attached to it, (each rental property she owns would be one page).

Basically it would be the main landing page, with the 6 attached pages, with descriptions, layouts of floor plans, pictures, and prices....

Where the hell would I start ???.... She's paying me $850.00 to do it, so I told her Yeah.... now I gotta learn quick!!!

download a free template and open it up and dreamweaver and learn as you go. it sounds like a pretty straightforward site. PM if you need and help, or if you wanna outsource it to me for half that price

or just find a nice template, there are loads in the download section.

It could be done in about 5 hours if you have the content already written!

web design takes a lot of time to learn. Sounds like you might need to do somethings you don't know how. HTML is the least of your worries. If they decide they need a database or something (to take applications for rentals), it's going to get a lot harder. I recommend a place that has a build your page type web site generator and templates. There is one here http://hipero.com but I don't know off hand if you can use your own domain. It's hiper.com/yoursite usually. You could always redirect or use frames though. Good luck man.

Yeah, give her a Word Press blog and teach her how to use it. Then she'll feel good b/c she knows how to use her site and can update it when she needs to (but more importantly so she's not calling you every couple of days asking you to change text or stupid stuff about the site). If you set her up with hosting too, find a place that has Fantastico Deluxe, it is a one click WP install, then upload the theme. You can do all kinds of other stuff for her, but theme and fantastico install is about 5 min for a lot of good stuff.

hell, I'd set up the site and do some customization for 200

Get a domain.
Get hosting.
Get dreamweaver.
Go to oswd.org and download a template.
Open it with dreamweaver. Copy the code 5 times in different files on dreamweaver (your pages)
Copy content on your pages however they are.
Edit the titles.

Save the files. Close dreamweaver. Upload them all.
Piece of cake.

Personally I think weebly is the cheap way out. Is your Boss looking for a real website that is not a simple drag and drop and always having the "Made with Weebly or Powered by Weebly" at the bottom?

I know if I were looking for property, ran across the site, saw that is was made by a free website maker, I might get the idea that the owner is cheap too when it comes to the property.

You see there's a lot of potential in website building. It may be a little "little time" that I'm saying for you but with the tens (not 100's) I did in the past I even think it can be done in less than 2 hours.

100% true. But we need to make sure that client is happy on what we are delivering. It would be viral if you deliver a good site to one client and that client pass on the good information to other noobish client and you get more orders.

IMHO, $850 to build someone a site is decent money but not enough.
Next time, charge $1,500 and outsource it if you have to. Then add on a $79.00 a month backend program to provide maintenance, SEO, content creation, promotion, whatever. There are quite a few peeps getting $1.5K for site-building.

what i find is that people who want to spend less than $500 usually really want all the bells and whistles of a $2000 web site, they neither know or realize the ROI of a properly designed site... in more cases i find that charging less than $2000 simply becomes more hassle than what its worth...

for $2000+ expect to have a site properly designed/developed an optimized so people can actually find the thing...

Anything less i would expect the site to have had its corners cut and be lucky if it if ever gets found in the top 5 pages of google let alone top 2...

the company i work for doesnt make sites for less than 5k euros, and plenty above 60k.. and that company is damn small lol

so 850$ is a peanuts site, outsource it if u cant make a site worth that much

i still say templates. It doesn't need to be dynamic, so don't worry about all that shizzle!

If weebly doesn't pan out, i'd outsource it for like $100. Loadsa people would kill for it i guess!

get what you can - i think the more professional you look the more you can demand ... unless your extremely, extremely good at blagging people then it doesnt matter!

u need to be a company with rep in order to get such clients, which means u need to make shitloads of little sites for bullshit clients first and stuff. cba with all that shit, esp not while im still at uni

$850 is pretty chintzy, you should also get paid for hosting, link building, SEO and maintenance.

Consider this your first paid consulting job and go all the way...

Set up a reseller hosting account and charge $300 for hosting every year. Also, if you control the site, that makes it harder to be fired for anything later on. Charge $2,000 for the project upfront at least and outsource the design for like $50 on elance...pocket the rest ;-)

$439.95...lol.

Use free templates, or use Template Monster.

Better yet, build a Wordpress site...it doesn't get any easier than that.
