I have a small garden area right outside my front door. About 10'x 20 foot area walled in by a 6 foot fence with a small rock garden and some plants in various sized pots. A small patio table with some chairs and a park bench to sit and relax. Just a nice little peaceful area between my front door and the rest of the world.
I typically go out and sit on the bench when I want to have a cigarette without smoking up the inside of my house.
Well just a few minutes ago I was sitting out there relaxing and getting a little lost in thought when I heard a flutter noise by my ear. I turned my head a little and much to my surprise I saw a hummingbird had flown down and landed on my shoulder.
I had just hung a new hummingbird feeder in the garden for my wife a few days ago, but as far as we could tell the birds haven't found it yet. We haven't really even seen any hummingbirds around any of our plants yet this year either. But here was this single hummingbird apparently out exploring the area and it decided of all things to land on my shoulder.
I guess since I was lost in my thoughts I must have been so still it thought I was a log or bush or fence or something. Whatever the reason it was pretty cool. I stayed still for about a minute and it just stayed there taking a break from its normally constant fluttering around. Finally I slowly moved my hand to my shoulder thinking it would be really cool if I could get it to perch on my finger, but that movement was enough to make it fly off. It didn't fly off like it was scared though, it just hopped up to the top of the fence right by me and stayed there watching me as I was watching him. Just a small moment between man and bird until finally flying away to complete its regular rounds.
It was the strangest thing to have happen. I've never even heard of a humming bird doing something like that. I wonder if that's considered an omen in some cultures. It seems like a type of thing that would be seen as a good omen. I'd like to think it is anyway.
Well, I thought I'd share it with you guys while it was still fresh in my mind.
Talk to you all later.
