The only problem is ... it's a 0 competition keyword.. The first page of Google literally has no on site seo/ZERO backlinks.. for the keyword, "city service". I mean I could literally get his site #1 with one small scrapebox blast. Also the thing is he was referred to me by another of my clients.

I'm hesitant to be a consultant for the guy, he was the one to offer me the $300/week. I've managed to convince him to make the payments via paypal with the weekly subscription option.

Anyway, I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do to continue on with this, or should I? All he wants is #1 for the keyword and he has no idea how to get it or who to talk to.. Lucky me

EDIT: Also upon getting him #1, how should I continue to "service" the guy

What's the problem if he can pay 300/week? You're an SEOer,you do your job for money. He pays you to get him there,he dosen't care if all you do is push a button or work 24/7 to get him there.

Sounds like a no-brainier to me, do it! If you don't want to carry a guilty conscience then offer him additional SEO / KW Research for some other related KWs he should rank for. That is my opinion, anyway.

explain to him the benefit of other keywords (that you research in advance) after you get him the one he wants. He will likely continue to use your services and be a happy customer who will refer you even more clients. No brainer.

It's not about how much is going to cost you, but how much value the client sees on your services. If he wants to pay you $300/week, then probably he is going to profit a lot more than that (or so he thinks). Anyway, if it isn't worth the $300, he'll soon notice and stop the service or ask for a lower price.

As to upselling, there's lots to be made out there, fan pages, corporate blog, youtube channels, you name it...

Yeah the keyword gets 0 searches.. lol

I think i'm just gonna get his keyword #1, he told me he has other keywords he'd like me to target aswell. All 0 searches/0 competition. Mindaswell, I'm just afraid if he finds out im "exploiting" him, he could ruin the reputation of my business.

If you're really worried about it....refer him to me. I will gladly make him happy. I'll pay you a referral fee as well.

I'd say from a business standpoint, where your objective is not only to make money, but to maintain a positive reputation, you're better off doing the work for a more reasonable rate. Or, as someone else suggested, tell him a higher price would give him much more than just #1 for this keyword.

You're setting yourself up for failure otherwise, as he'll either figure it out or will become disappointed with the lack of business he'll generate, relative to how much he is spending. Doing it the other way will not only last longer, but you'll establish trust.

Charge hime $300 for the first week and then give him the entire first page for the same price using blogs you own and maintain. That way if he stops paying he keeps his number 1 spot but you keep your blogs and push him off the first page with them.

Ignore what everyone said so far. Here is what you do in a situation like this.

Tell him instead of paying you weekly, you would rather him pay you a flat fee for the ranking. Then, charge him a monthly "maintenance" fee to keep the keyword ranking well.

Upfront cash + monthly residual of like $250 or something.

then provide him a real service like finding more keywords for him.

rank the one he wants, then tell him about others that have more traffic and that you will start getting him traffic from those

you can track actual traffic and use that as a metric of whether you are providing a valuable service to him

A 0 competition market is a huge opportunity. Take his money, but give him what he paid for. As long as that keyword is getting searches, it's worth ranking for. Try and find a couple more keywords to go after to add to the results.

Then expand the campaign. Get a couple sub-sites/profiles/articles going and dominate the entire first page of Google. If you can get sites in all 10 of 10 spots, then he will see a benefit as almost all the traffic will be going to him.

This is an awesome opportunity for both of you. Imagine how amazing it would look to your future potential clients, that you controlled an entire first page of Google for one of your current clients. They'll sign up right on the spot.

Someone wants to pay you, how did he come up with the figure? Obviously $300/wk for 20 seconds work to most people is absurd. But, cost is relative, if he thinks it is worth that amount them go for it. But you've got to give him value or he will either fly or damage your reputation and either way is not really a prudent way to build your business..

Maybe just get him more spots on the first page.... Merchant Circle can rank pretty good and its free! Then just charge him a retainer every month so you dont help his competition! :]

Buy cheap links for his website...make his website number one. And then after few days remove some backlinks to push his website down again :D bamm 300$/week forever

You're hesitant to work w/ him? Refer him to me :p

Jokes apart, don't miss it out budd.

Like I said, I wouldn't mind the money. I'm just hesitant of him finding out that I'm "exploiting" him. Although his company is already a money factory, he just wants online exposure. The guy doesn't seem like the money matters and throwing 300$/week is still pennies for him. I was just hesitant because of the reputation that "it" might give me if he finds a SEO service at obviously a smaller rate. Thanks for the suggestions, I think I may give him the benefit in me finding more keywords for the key, especially that whole page one on Google concept, brilliant. Thanks for that, this guy is very high up there in my area and if I could get referrals from him, that would do wonders for my business. Then again, if I get complaints...

But I think I'm going to provide him with the full page results, I could probably do it within 2 weeks and he'd be amazed (hopefully).

You can also do a bit of KW research for this guy and suggest more KW's to him complementary which are easier to achieve. You will retain this customer if you keep him busy like this. Every month or two you can come with new ideas or new KWs so he is happy with you.

Here's an idea. Find the Right KW's he should be targeting. Get him number one for those as well.

When his business is increased 10 fold because you "took care of him"

He'll be extremely greatful.

And what do you think he's gonna tell his buddies at the country club/bar/cigar club or where ever he spends his off time? I guarantee it won't be, "hey this guy I hired ripped me off!"

Just starting your business, your looking at something MUCH more valuable than cash at this point, WORD OF MOUTH advertising :P

Hope that helps....

do what the customer wants, I bet he never heard about the "monthly searches" expression so dont worry, to keep up the service give him some more keywords and he will get traffic after them

If you wanna do the safe way warn them you cant guarantee any traffic even if they are 1st on google for the keywords they give you

Its a fair thing imho and the company can blame the manager who gave the keywords not you who did the job :)
