PayPal Has My $1k

PayPal sucks and doesn't deserve any of their customers. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, let me explain my situation. Like most Paypal-ers, I've had my account limited numerous times despite the fact that I verified it a couple years ago. I've given them more personal information than I've given to anyone and everyone combined. Yet, they're at it again. This time, however, they are asking for things I cannot give them.

My account was instantly limited because they "did a review of my account and need more information" after I failed an application for a new PayPal debit card. (as an aside, I've had one before. Unfortunately, they shut it down because I used it in another state. Despite countless hours on the phone, they never could activate it again.) They are asking that I send them scanned files of my social security card, driver's license, and utility bill. Here's the problem: I'm 17. I've been using PayPal for a few years now, but this is the end. They have locked up the $1,061 I've made the last month flipping websites.

The bottom line is I need that money. I need it so I can fund a few more of my ventures/schemes, continue using SEnuke X, Aweber, Niche Profit Classroom, and the other countless tools I pay subscriptions for.

Can anyone chime in with a possible ailment? Would it fly if I sent them a very nice looking ID with an edited birth date? If I send them my real SSN with that, would they cross check it? Probably. Someone please help the blackhat youth!

(If all else fails, I know they will ban my account and I will get the money back in 6 months, but lets be honest, who has 180 days to wait for something made in a month?)

Yeah PayPal can be tricky... whenever they do this sort of stuff to me I just create a new account with a new address and keep on going but for some reason they always catch up to me so I am not 100% positive on what you should do. Maybe ask your parents for some guidance and information they are requiring... I don't see your parents getting mad if your doing legit business online.

The same exact thing happened to me bro! Except mine was far less.
They've locked up my $250 and I'll get it back sometime in summer.
They asked for an SSN, driver license, and bunch of other bullsh*t
that they could possibly control your whole life with. I didn't submit
my SSN, because I'm 16, and if they ran a check, they would find out
that I'm underage anyways. Yeah, GayPal sucks, I switched on over to
AlertPay. Your best bet would probably just wait until the 6 months is over,
don't even bother talking to them, because if you slip up and they find out
you're underage, you're sh*ts gone.

Well I tried this and I am 14 and I can't even get my money out because it says some thing about bank account, credit card etc (stuff you have to be 18 for. I don't know if you have a parent, relative or friend with a verified paypal with either a credit card or bank account credited to it but. If you try to create a paypal teen account under them, they should be sending me a debit card and it goes through the relaitves information (in this case my dads) but saying you are 17 if it is close to your birthday, then it would be more worthwhile to wait. Additionally, when I get the debit card, I am going to try and verify the account with it and receive the money with the debit card and transfer it to the student account. I hope this is a reasonable explanation and helps you recover your funds. The only thing I look down on (and is holding me back) is they said it takes 2-4 weeks for delivery. Well I say wait for your six months and I believe PayPal does not cross reference your information as I did that when I was underage but that was a couple years back so don't know if they will you can go ahead and take the chance, but that would be risking the grand you have in the account so my suggestion would be just wait the 6 month and get alertpay and till than just borrow some money from your dad and tell him your situation and continue what your doing and just screw PayPal. Man I wish someone could mess with PayPal, I mean there have to be a way to mess them up right? But anyways good luck man and hope you get your money back soon.

It sounds to me like you probably already provided a utility and drivers license before but I think that is enough. To also have your SSN is going a bit far now.

Tell them if they do not unlock your account in one week, you are taking them to small claims court for withholding your money. If they do not listen via the emails that's cool. When there is about 1-2 days left, call them up on the phone and tell the lady you speak to that SHE is being recorded right now (inform her nicely and tell her why she is being recorded... they start to act really nice to you at this point) and explain the situation to her.

Then tell her you want her name and log down the time of the call and say you will be using it as reference if needed in court. Tell her PayPal have 48 hours to allow you to withdraw your money or you are taking them to small claims court. Give them a location to go by as well, ie- tell them which small claims court you are taking them to if they do not unlock the money.

They fucked my friend around for about 1 month of sending in a SHIT LOAD of fucking ID and they would STILL not unlock the account. It was ID after ID after ID and they kept coming up with bullshit excuses. My friend is one of those who needs help doing these things... so I regularly found myself helping him and I got pissed off. So when I called I had every intention of taking them to court here and I told here exactly how it is going to be. Needless to say the next day the money was unlocked and could be taken out.

That is right take them to small claims court. They have a lot of people that have done this and PayPal settled these claims outside of court they are scared shitless about getting sued because if they have so many cases in court the SEC might come down on them and give them a lot of restrictions and they don't want that. Thanks Ahmeda for supporting, but I want to make it clear it was used as a scare tactic but I had every intention of going to court. I was actually also recording the call not just joking about it. At that time I was fed up with their crap and was going to take them and if I had a chance to take them for damages (which they made my friend stop his eBay while it was sorted out) then we would have also done that.

The big problem for them in our case was that I am in Australia. If they did not send a high-paid lawyer of theirs over here, then they automatically lose and the court rules my way (if I can prove it). Or they can send someone here at the price of a plane ticket and still end up losing because of all the ID's I had sent in.

Do what is needed and get that money back. I am sure they'll work with you as soon as you tell them you're going to court.

I registered for this site due to this post. Take em to small claims. 1k is legit to take to court and get it for sure. No one will rule against you. You win. That's what happened to me.

that aint nothing. .they are holding $3200 from me now and that number is growing each day my customers use paypal at checkout.
I want to remove paypal and leave only my other options but im afraid i will loose sales all together. I got 2 months until they release it

I have a friend like that too. I'm all for doing stuff for friends, but some people really need to gauge their neediness...

PayPal needs to be shut down. They are too big to avoid FDIC regulations by pretending they aren't a bank. You can't treat customers bad and then collect interest on their frozen funds. Something has gotta give.

I'm going to take your advice. I'll call them tomorrow and let you guys know what happens.

By the way, the reasons why PayPal isn't subject to the standard FDIC regulations (how they are able to limit accounts freely) is because they don't hold physical money or keep charters and call themselves a 'money service' ...whatever the hell that means. The funny thing is that they collaborate with FDIC-regulated banks to hold the physical money. Basically, they use the services of other banks to operate like a bank without being classified as a bank themselves. It's a nasty loophole. A nasty loophole that continues to hurt small businesses everyday.

Yep I think taking them to court will be a good option. Although from my past experience, you likely won't even end up going to court.

You need to show the court that you have tried to do what they have asked you to do. So, if they have asked you to send in photo ID and utility bill (which I believe you would have already submitted at some point earlier) then just submit it again. I personally would not submit the SSN and tell them I do not feel safe with them holding it.

If they don't unlock it, which they probably won't (if it is the same as what they did to my friend, we kept sending in the requested ID but they kept saying it is incorrect) then that is when you call up, tell them you are recording them, ask for their name and tell them you are noting down the time of call etc. At this point they should be very attentive to your needs as it is their ass on the line if the case goes to court and then you present the recording as evidence.

You have to be fair with them in regards to trying to reason with them, but the moment they start making shit up just to keep your money then that is when you tell them you're going to court. You can be 17 and although you break their bullshit "ToS" because you are under 18 that does NOT mean they are owners of YOUR money and that will not stand in court. So yeah, your PP might get banned but the money is yours.

Hope it all works out well for you and you don't actually need to go to court for it, but if you do keep us informed.

Haha funny thing! The exact same thing happened to me. I'm actually 18 so I'm all clear, but 2 or 3 times I attempted to apply for the debit card. It's pretty much a lost cause though. I'm sure there's just something wrong with their system because it asks you for your info and then once you submit it, you have to wait 30 days or something, and then it starts all over again. I emailed them once but it didn't help a whole lot, and didn't care enough to get the card after that, so I just gave up and submitted my info once more so I could get my account back. It's like a continuous never-ending loop which they need to fix, and hopefully will if people call them.

Anyway, if you want your money, I'd recommend not falsifying any info. It's illegal first of all, I'm sure... not that I care or anything, but there's a chance it could mess things up for ya if they realize your info wasn't correct. The unfortunate thing is that you're supposed to be 18 to have an account, so I'm not sure what'll end up happening, or if you'll have to wait it out? Maybe you can use a parent's info on there? I know I had my account when I was a minor, and I used my dad's credit card on there to have access to the account. But it never asked me for crap like the SSN or driver's license, because I had never applied for the debit. Doing that can screw ya over!

I have a Paypal Debit card that had expired. Problem was, I moved to an acreage and no longer have a Street address. I have a PO Box. For security reasons, they do not send debit cards to PO Boxes! They can only send it to a Street address!

So, I provided a street address from one of my relatives. But they needed me to send in my drivers license and a utility bill showing my address.

I receive some of my utility bills in PDF format. So, I edited the address using Adobe Acrobat Pro.

I edited my drivers license using photoshop. Sent it to them and my street address is now verified.
