I wouldnt recommend a laptop for gaming purposes because of overheating issues, unless you consider alienware. A new one will be way over your budget but its always possible to find good used deals on egay and cl.
For work and editing, anything with dual core cpu and 4-6 gb ram should do the job and that is definitely within your price range.

try looking on Asus ROG laptops.. altho it will cost u more if u really consider gaming.

lol that has nothing to do with heat. The video cards are the monsters that make laptops overheat so easy. (When Gaming)
