Who the f*** knows... but it drives me crazy you visit the site and he is there looking at you with a glare, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) as if the onus is on the users to keep the site going when all the lazy bastard has to do is visit kontera or adsense and set up an account and pay some tech geek to install it!!

[I hope that he is just too lazy for his sake.]

Imagine if you ranked on the first page of Google for millions of keywords, never had to produce any content (wikipedia is so an autoblog btw) and then couldn't be arsed trying to monetise it!! (And on top of that I'm sure the domain name is worth tens of millions)

It pisses me off.

Dear dheer,

There are thousands of webmasters on this forum struggling to make profit with their websites. There is a guy out there who refuses to monetize his site and then begs for donations. I am sure some people out there would find this guy a little arrogant.. I know I do and wish to express my feelings about this man to the forum and then see if anybody felt the same. The could agree with me by hitting the thanks button, I am not looking to stir up a big debate.

The point is, He owns it. He have made the right choice, I think. and he asks for Donation only for Wikipedia, not for himself. A try of monetization will make no difference between Wikipedia and an as usual article directory.

he is not forcing anyone to pay instead just requesting and it worth for a donation IMO.. and why is google listing it on #1 for plenty of keywords is bcz the content of the site is superior.. I'm sure you have also used this site for plenty of times to gain knowledge and no one can refuse it..

If you would have told similar things for facebook then I would have given you thanks and + reps as they are the real assholes..

Wikipedias content is not superior. Unique, but not superior. It is a collection of articles written by random people and is not to be trusted.

He makes more money thru donations than he would monetizing it with adsense. Besides, if he added advertising, a lot of people would stop contributing with articles.

He is also the owner of wikia and it is monetized with adsense.

That guy was lucky. He got an idea (a brilliant one, btw) that could grow automatically. He just has to pay the ones who handle the technicalities. But he was extremely lucky. Nobody could create something like that these days. And no, Facebook does not count. That's something very different

Please tell me? If he did place ads on Wikipedia, would that mean you would get a piece of the pie? Probably not.

Which would mean you would have probably came here saying how much you hate Jimmy Wales for making millions/billions of dollars off of Wikipedia and not sharing with writers/users.

Instead of wasting your time hating Jimmy or any other person ideas/business model, why not come up with one yourself?

Finally, you can hate Jimmy all you want but at the end of the day, you are not the one who is paying his bills and I am pretty sure he isn't sitting around hating you for how you run your sites/business. Donate or don't donate, wouldn't make a difference to him.

don't hate on wikipedia lol. it's one of the best websites out there.

the money goes to paying for the massive server costs needed to maintain something like that.

i think asking for donations is a reasonable alternative to placing ads everywhere.

If you were a professional and referenced wikipedia as one of your sources then you would be laughed at.

well wikipedia still has a lot of a great and useful information, even though I agree a lot of material there can not be trusted. the main thing is wiki is non-profit so I dont see anything wrong with asking for donations..

I remember watching a documentary about him and apparently he failed for a very long time trying to get it set up, went through a lot of versions of the site, failed with them.

He poured a lot into it and lost his own money for a long time so it's good he got this successful, if anything it's an example of how good work and dedication pays off in the end. At least he's making an impact on the web while you're hear whining like a bitch.

I'm fully aware of how hard work and dedication pays off.

the whole purpose is to not run ads because wikipedia is meant to be unbiased (as you can humanly be).

I think its his own black hat method and some people maybe piss off to look at it.

I wish I could own your problems, I'd be a very happy man.
