Dude, that is totally jacked up - But I want to know who let this one slip.. or if any of us would be THIS ballsy.

"He was alone guarding about 100 inmates at the time of the attack and had a radio to call for backup in case of trouble. He didn't have what many guards in California's state prisons routinely count on: pepper spray, a protective vest and a collapsible baton."

The Bureau of Prisons opposes giving their officers non lethal weapons for protection... What the hell are they supposed to use? The fucking Force? Care Bear Stare? At least give the guy a sword so he can summon the power of Grayskull.

I like you. You're funny.

Lets not forget, he could have used the radio to call for backup - I hear GI Joe gets there quick.

(Lets see how young the members of this forum are, shall we? I'm taking it back to 1985.)

"Yo Joe!
He'll fight for freedom where ever there's trouble.
GI Joe is there.

It's GI Joe against Cobra the enemy
Fighting to save the day.
He never gives up.
He's always there,
Fighting for freedom over land and air

GI Joe- A real American hero
GI Joe is there

GI Joe is the codename for American's daring, highly trained
special mission force.
It's purpose, to defend human freedom against Cobra-
a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world.

He never gives up.
He'll stay til the fight's won.
GI Joe will dare.

GI Joe- A real American hero
GI Joe"

Many do not realize just how dangerous it really is to work in either prisons or psychiatric facilities.....

In the psych facilities that I worked in, you were NOT allowed to have any protection whatsoever.........and some of the pts were actually Sociopaths who were well-known to the Jail system as they had already spent time there.

We had to make our own protection and we did.......we would take mattresses off of beds and use them as shields and to actually control a violent individual.

Many a night I would come home with new cuts and wearing clothes that were not the same ones as when I reported to work......

I warned the Administration that they were accepting inappropriately dangerous Sociopaths and that someone was going to get hurt.......and they did.....a pt went on a rampage and murdered 4 other fellows pts and one RN with his bare hands....it was horrible.

100:1 odds how stupid of the Prison Administration. And the rationale for no non-lethal protection was equally absurd.......

I feel very badly for the murdered Prison Guard. He served his Country and was the victim of some really bullshit rules..........it is one thing to abuse prison inmates, it is entirely another to let the prisoners run the prison!

Those guards should all go to work and refuse to go out into the General Population, until some real protection is instituted.........

Those inmates have nothing to lose, so they do not value another human beings life......

If it wasn't for my Martial Arts background, I would have been severely injured on the job. It saved me multiple times from being beaten or choked to death. So, I would try the Crisis Intervention Prevention crap that they teach you and then when all else failed.....I had to do what I had to do.......

If I had been that guard, I would have told them to go get bent........

The whole system needs to be revamped.........

well put bro, and thanks for putting yourself out on the line for us as well. its a shame that THIS needs to happen before the public takes notice. hopefully this wont get swept under a rug, and progress can be made towards protecting the people who are protecting us.

I agree with in niche1. Even though I didn't worked in exactly what might be called a psychiatric facility, but it more of a "daycare center" for the mentally ill. We had to deal with the socialpaths, delusional, child molestors, mentally ill, and anger proned individuals that was somehow deem "less dangerous" to society than the ones niche1 dealt with in a 24/7 psychiatric facility. Some of these guys have to take 16 or more pills a day, and we had to make sure they take them throughout the day. They were constantly disregarding of rules, fighting, and a couple of them was caught bringing knives. The guards or staff were not allowed to have weapons or arm themselves.

I once got into a situation with a violent individual that did not take his medication, was high on "street drugs" and was starting trouble with a female staff member. I had to pin him down until my female co-worker called the guards.

They should take all inmates that are in for murder, rape and any other bad charges, set them up on a private island. Give all them guns, bombs, rocket launchers, and any other weapons. Set up cameras all over and let them have a free for all, kill each other and only one person can survive and he will get a TV in his cell for surviving. Then make a reality show about it.

Someone watches too much tv/movies.

And if they have guns, bombs, rocket launchers, etc.. You really think they will let someone come and take them back to jail? lol.

Inmates are scandalous. Plain and simple. They aren't in a penal institution because they got the good boy/girl of the year award. The Department of Corrections doesn't allow officers to carry lethal weaponry due to the likelihood of attacks and riots. In Michigan, officers carry a pair of handcuffs, a radio, and an alert device. The officers are charged with the care, custody and control of the facility, without the use of weapons, which may potentially be used against them. The officers learn to implement mind control methods to manage prisoners. All MDOC officers are trained in deescalating potentially dangerous situations using physical measures if necessary. Officers also work in teams of two in the housing units. In addition, most of the officers are trained in martial arts. Furthermore, each prison in our state has their own ERT (Emergency Response Team) that is permitted to carry lethal weapons in the event of a riot or escape.

While correctional officers are unionized, they are deemed by state government to be "first line defense". Refusing to work when reporting for duty would result in termination.

My husband has worked for the MDOC for 14 years. He has worked at two prisons in our state. Some of the stories he has told me would make your head spin. I also have an associates degree in criminal justice as well as my corrections officer certificate.
