Default Using Myspace Apps to Make Money

This is a method that I've been using for close to a year now with great success. I'm really shocked that no one else has posted this method before as it is so obvious and incredibly easy. Just thought I'd share since I've learned a lot in this community.

    Basically these are the steps:
    1. Sign up to the myspace developers program
    2. Create an app
    3. Monetize it with ads or anything you want really
    4. Rinse and repeat

So after you sign up with the developers program you will create your first app. So what kind of app should you create? Why a game of course! So what type of game should you use? Flash games of course!

It is important to know that you do not have to be a developer to use this method. Go out to any website and get the embed code for a popular flash game. The more popular the game the more users you will have. Think about what games are popular on xbox and wii and you can usually find a flash equivalent, but even things like solitaire, blackjack, etc. will get you a few thousand users.

So why MySpace instead of Facebook? If you notice in the MySpace apps directory you will notice a listing for "New Apps". Facebook does not have this listing feature and this is where the majority of your new signups will come from. After your app is approved you will be listed on the main myspace apps homepage for at least 12 hours, usually longer. This will give you HUGE exposure and adds.

    Monetization
How you monetize is up to you. There are plenty of whitehat and blackhat methods that you can use. You are allowed by myspace to advertise on the canvas pages of the apps. Adsense works well with a little tweeking. By default adsense has trouble getting the content off of the canvas pages but you can use an iframed page with keywords in it to build relevance.

All the blackhatters will probably be drooling when they think about the potential here. Let's look at some stats. Say you have 10,000 installs on your app (I currently have 4 with at least 10,000 installs, not hard). Now you have a canvas page for that app, but you also have a profile page for that app. So if each of those users gets just 10 profile views per day that is 100,000 daily impressions from one app.

Although advertising on the profile page is against the rules those who are creative will find a way. It just takes a little outside of the box thinking. I used to CS epn there but got banned because I was stupid. It was before I learned the in's and outs of cloaking. But before I got banned I was doing $1K a day.

I think that I've covered just about everything here. Thanks are appreciated

No problem. This is a great way to get some startup money for affiliate marketing as well. You can easily build up a few thousand dollars without spending anything and then move into other areas of affiliate marketing.

MySpace allows you to include Advertising only on your Application Profile Page(s) and Canvas Page(s) in the areas which you control; provided that you may not provide Advertising which in any way implies MySpace endorsement or affiliation with such Advertising.

I got it figured out, now i gotta wait 72 hours and see if its gets approved!

I found a random mini clip game and ebmeded it.... it does have mini clip written all over the app, but i saw another app with watermarks from another gaming site so i think this should be pretty cool.

lol did you guys read! YOU DONT NEED KNOWLEDGE IN APPLICATION PROMOTION

Ok, i have already taken the code from a MiniClip game and placed it on my canvas page in myspace. I am still waiting for the app to get approved. Because my app has mini clip watermarks on it, i am not so sure that it will get approved. However i have seen some other apps with watermarks from other less popular game websites.

I will continue to update this thread for you guys and let you know my progress. I might leave out the full steps on this post, only because im not sure if my own method at this very moment will get approved. But this is what i have done so far.

    1) Signed up for myspace development (link is down the bottem)
    2) Went over to miniclip.com
    3) Clicked on any random game
    4) At the bottom of the game window there is a tab that says "post to my blog/website"
    5) Go to option 3
    6) Now take a code from one of the games here, and place it inside the canvas section of your myspace app creation
    7) Save the game icon from miniclip and resize it to 16x16 and 36x36 and upload the pic into the two boxes where it says, on the page where you enter your app title and everything

This is where i will leave it for now, once you publish your app you will have to wait for it to get apporved, this is exactly where i am right now. Once i get it approved, or another app approved from another gaming site i will give you more details including:

    # How to use Dreamweaver or any other html editor to post ads next to your app
    # An even more detailed step by step into how to do everything, i left out some steps in there

And thats about all i can think of right now, but there should be more.

Unless bhdan wants to do a full detailed e-book or something?. Sorry to bhdan, im kinda taking over his method and helping others with it.

ok this is the feedback from Myspace that i got:

Feedback from MySpace admins: Description – Applications must have an accurate description on the application profile, gallery, and within the application itself, including appropriate icons and application requirements. A description about application functionality/purpose is required. note: age restrictions must be clearly mentioned in the applications description.

So it seems that they do not give a shit about miniclip.com ect.

    Happy Promoting

I will touch up my description ect. And i should get approved it looks like.

Wow how simple, and yet this is the first post about it I believe.

Anyone care to explain how to monetize this, such as where/how to put up the ads? Thanks if you do.

Sorry to everyone for kind of abandoning this post and thanks to oni3350 for picking up where I left off. I see a lot of people asking questions and getting rejections because of ads and issues with them. The best thing to do is submit your app for approval with NO ads first. Once you are approved you can go back and add them because you don't have to go through a thorough approval again to submit changes and updates. Hope this helps!

As far as approvals go you will never get approved on the first try. I think this is just Myspace's way of making you jump through a few hoops to get listed in the directory. I have done about 20 apps and never got approval on the first try.

As far as monetization goes Adsense works well. Just make sure you use image ads and not text. Myspace users like pretty pictures . You can use whatever ad program you like though. Banners for affiliate programs work great, especially zip/email submits.

Technically you can't have ads on the profile or home pages. However if you get creative you can get around that. Don't think about putting straight up ads on those pages. I can't list out all the methods exactly because if too many people start using it like that then it will get shut down in a heartbeat.

Just be creative and think like a marketer and you will do just fine. Also, test out different things and see what works for your app.

You will not get banned for adding apps. They want you to add apps so if you can do 100 a day go for it. The only way to get banned is if you break the rules so be careful. I can't speak for the legality of adding apps from other sites but most of these flash games want to be distributed as much as possible. No one can stop these apps from being distributed so they've actually got things in place like mochi ads for flash developers that put ads into the games. In these cases distribution is a good thing for the flash game developers. And if they didn't want them distributed then they shouldn't offer the embed code so easily.

It's just cut and paste. Copy your adsense code from adsense and paste it wherever you want in your canvas page's html editor. After that just press the "Save" button and publish the changes. That's really all there is to it.

Alright I think I've figured it out. So I go to edit my app, click on the edit app source tab, then just paste my adsense code into the canvas surface tab. Correct?

And I'm not allowed to put it into the Profile & Home surface am I?

Unfortunately yes. This is a known limitation with Myspace apps. Plenty of developers have let them know how much it sucks. Hopefully they will change it in the future. I have a web hosting account and I just create a new email address for each app and forward them all to my gmail account that I use the most.

Wow that just doesn't make any sense at all why Myspace would do that. That just plain stupid in my opinion lol. Well looks like I'll be hitting up hotmail and forwarding them all to my gmail account.

I just got my first app approved today, it waited about 60 hours (saw this drunk on Friday, made 5 apps with flash games embedded same night). The other 4 are awaiting approval. I read today that removing the ads helped, so I commented them out real quick.

I'll let you guys know what kind of app installs I'm getting. Right now it's just 1 (myself), but is listed in the Apps gallery.

I re-enabled the ads now that it's Live, but I don't expect to see much traffic from this. There are a *TON* of games in the Apps gallery that have fewer than 100 installs, some quite old. The Flash game I am offering was listed on several websites in the Top 10 in popularity in 2008. Hopefully that adds some value. Hoping some Myspacer will think "oh hey, I remember that game!" and install it, maybe click my ad.

I wish I had enough rep/posts to talk about CS :-) I can't wait to get some info and try it.

I'll keep this updated! In a few hours I'll let everyone know how many installs I have.

I'm waiting for my first one to be approved. And how many posts do you need to see the CS boards?

    http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackha...php?do=cfrules states:

And they have to be *quality* posts. Not just "thanks for that" or "neat!" :-)

You might have a hard time getting approval on this one. I tried to do a "Freebie" app and was denied due to some rule they have in place about rewarding users. I kind of gave up on it after that, but that doesn't mean you couldn't get it through with some perseverance. Absolutely try though and then PM me if you get it approved. I'd be interested to know if you were able to do it. This is the type of creative thinking that will make you successful using this method.

MySpace is very hypocritical though because companies like Zynga basically have gambling with their texas hold'em. You can actually pay cash to buy chips there. But they don't mess with the big guys like Zynga because they are paying the bills over there at MySpace.

    Thanks brothers! You ALL Rock...
Have patience young grasshopper . Give it a few days to get onto the "Popular Apps" tab. Once you hit that you will see your numbers jump. I don't think you are far off at all from getting to that point. Not every app will hit 10,000 installs, but yours should at least get up to the 3,000 mark if you just give it a little time. Look at this as a project that will earn you money for years to come and not a quick turnaround buck. My apps have been earning well for me for over a year now despite MySpace's decline in users.

Still 3 installs. Had another approved though.

Tip: To avoid this disapproval message:
    1. User Experience / Functionality:
This game already exists on MySpace. Applications must contain elements that are unique from existing applications.
give your app a unique title and description If you search the app gallery and find a flash game (or whatever) that is identical to the one you're posting, try to use synonyms, and some obfuscation as to the source of the swf in my iframe. For example:

    URL of SWF: http://www.addictinggames.com/D78AQSAKQLQWI9/5519.swf
Game title already in gallery: Tattoo Artist
Game description in gallery: Fill as much of the tattoo as quick as you can!

It's a moderately popular game on Myspace (roughly 8780 installs). So if I wanted to use this too, I would have to be pretty sneaky and change a few things so a simple search wouldn't trigger any alarms.

First, I'd obfuscate the SWF URL. We know it's http://www.addictinggames.com/D78AQSAKQLQWI9/5519.swf, so using something like http://centricle.com/tools/ascii-hex/ I might encode part of the URL. This makes this:
    http://www.addictinggames.com/D78AQSAKQLQWI9/5519.swf

    Look like this:
    http://www.addictinggames.com/%44%37...49%39/5519.swf

(copying the swf to your server or further obfuscation is suggested. This is just an example).

Next, I would use a different title:
-Existing title already used: Tattoo Artist
    -New title: Get inked!

Next, I would use a different description:
-Existing description already used: Fill as much of the tattoo as quick as you can!
-New description: Tattoo your friend within the time limit. 18+ only!

    Some other tips:

    1) Use new icons. Duplicate icons probably wont get you approved. Just change any relevant small/medium image you find on google images to 64x64 and 16x16 jpg.
    2) Clickbank and other networks like to put
    Code:
    <a href="whatever" target="_top">
for the link. Just make sure your new apps use "_blank" to open in a new window.

OK I got this message sent to me about my app being published but I can't figure out how to do it, any help?
    1. User Experience / Functionality:
On the app profile page, the app title appears to be "removed" instead of "removed". Please log into the application profile (using the email address and password associated with the application) and update the app name.
    Also,
    1. What is the callback URL under the App Information tab?
    2. What is the OAuth stuff under the App Information tab?

Use the myspace developers forum for any questions regarding denial messages. They respond pretty quickly there and can help push your app through. I wouldn't worry about the callback url and oauth. That is for more advanced development and would probably be out of scope for this method. You use those things when you have an app hosted on your own servers and you want to communicate with MySpace's data.

Alright thanks once again, you've supplied the best responses I've had since being on this forum.

That's the best part and why I do MySpace apps over Facebook. You don't have to do anything to be listed in the "Popular Apps" section. After a day or two of being in the apps directory your app will just appear there. Also notice that when you go to the apps directory the "Popular Apps" is selected by default. Everyone gets to be on the default apps directory page at MySpace which is where most of your users will come from.

What is the best way to add an app? At miniclip they offer the embed code and stuff. Do I just copy/paste that into the canvas surface editor on myspace, or would it be better to download the .swf and upload that and stuff?

I would just use their embed code. Saves your bandwidth and hassle. I've not had any issues doing this.

    Alright thanks.

Well I thought I had it figured out lol but turn out I'm still confused.

Can you give a rundown of the canvas, profile, and home pages. I just don't understand when you edit and add code to one where it will show up.
