Can you give a rundown of the canvas, profile, and home pages. I just don't understand when you edit and add code to one where it will show up.
|
Sure, no problem. The canvas page is the application's page itself. For example if you play mafia wars the screen where you play the game is the canvas page.
The profile page is the profile page of the person who adds your app. This is the screen that myspace users display to the world. If you put code in the profile tab of your app and save it then it will show up on the user's profile page in a box. For mafia wars it is probably something like "Join my mafia family" in a box on the myspace users profile page.
The home page is the page that a myspace user sees after they log into myspace. It is the page where they check their messages and receive their updates. If you put code into the home tab of your app then when the user adds your app that code will display in a box on their home page.
You can use the buttons at the bottom of each tab in the developers area. They say "Dev App" and "Live App". Make some changes, save them and the select "Dev App" to see how they will look. Hope this helps.

Re: Using Myspace Apps to Make Money
Awesome. Just had another approved 2 hours ago, already has 3 installs.
MJordan, what I'm doing is:
1) Create a new html document on my webserver, adding in the embed code from some flash game (millions freely available). I note the URL somewhere.
2) In MySpace Apps, I use a new email addy (make sure it's real, cuz they do send a confirmation link to it. Or, at the very least set an account up as a "catchall" for your domain with your hosting provider), give a new title, description, and icon.
3) In the "Edit App Source" tab, I set the height to something bigger than my flash game (in case I want ads above and below, or taller ones just to the sides of the game)
4) Change "App Type" to "External IFrame"
5) Add the URL I noted in step 1 to "External IFrame URL:"
6) Save Application Source, and click "My Apps"
7) "Publish" the new app.
8) Wait 10-72 hours for approval (hopefully)
9) Once it's approved, I edit the HTML I created in Step 1 to include my ads.
10) Profit!
Edit: I'm still trying to get to step 10.

Great post, thanks for that step-by-step. Now a few questions: What about if I wanted to put a CPA offer up instead of just adsense, is that possible? Is it possible to blank/fake the referrer because I don't think Maxbounty will like the myspace traffic and I don't want to get banned.
And I'm confused by the term webserver. So I need to buy a cheap hosting plan, make a new HTML file and put it up on the site?

I use MaxBounty as well. I talked to my AM and she said MySpace and Facebook ads are OK, as long as the offer in their Description doesn't mention "No social media traffic"
I swear, they should add a new item for it (Solo email ads/search traffic/incentive traffic/social media).
But yes, you could fake the referer if you wanted to. There are a *ton* of resources on BHW on how to do this:

http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackha...e-referer.html

Yes sir, I would suggest using some cheap hosting. A domain name can increase your credibility with your traffic, you can (usually) have multiple domain pointing to one hosting plan (I use Bluehost and have 6 domains hosted under one package. No need to pay $70/yr for each domain and hosting). Of course, this limits scalability, but if I ever notice one of my domains doing well enough that it's taking too much disk/bandwidth/whatever, I could probably afford to xfer it to a new hosting package
Having your own hosting package will open up a world of BH possibilities You'll notice a LOT of scripts in here are PHP, where else are you going to run them without limitation?

Nice, I posted up 5 yesterday so it should be another 2 days I'd say before they get approved. It takes me like 5-10 minutes to put one up, a lil longer but not too much if I have to make a new email, so I'm gonna create 1 new app a day. If my adsense and CPA offers work then I should start making at least a little money.

Re: Using Myspace Apps to Make Money
Im just not too sure about the traffic to these games.... we may have to do a little extra promoting of our own.......
Tomorrow i am going to create about 10 accounts and submit at least 5 games to each, then see how it goes.

Yeah I don't see how you say you have over 10k installs on at least 4 of your apps. I've searched tons of game apps and never seen anywhere near 10k installs on any of them.
How would we go about promoting them ourself?

Same question. I wish I had access to the CS part of the forums lol.
And I got my first app approved, I think it will be pretty popular. I added adsense and a CPA offer to the canvas page, so I'm now waiting on approval of those changes, I hope they accept.

apparently there is no aproval for changes, bhdan says once you get accepted you can change ads and they do not have to approve it right?
Also you should have access to CS section, i think you only need 50 posts.... lol look for it.
But be careful when doing that shit on myspace, he got caught and fucked up lol.

Yup I just figured that out, so I now have my first live add with a CPA offer and adsense. Lets hope I get some views and clicky now!
And yeah I have 50 posts, but I haven't been a member for more than 30 days yet.

I don't give away the apps I own because I do some blackhat stuff but I would recommend searching for Guitar Hero if you don't think 10K installs is possible.

Well I've been trying really hard to stay legit since I got busted and frankly, it sucks. Like everyone else I'm very lazy and love easy money. Marketing the right way is definitely not "set it and forget it" like so many "gurus" would have you believe. It takes constant work and tweeking.
I guess the "short" answer to your question is that it varies. I've had really good months where I've made from 3-5K but I've seen that deteriorate since last fall. The advertising, especially social advertising, isn't there like it was when it was new. I'm still trying to find the right combo of cpa, cpc, etc that makes the most money. Not sure I'll ever find it since I'm always trying new things.
I've found Adsense to be the best right now and I'm getting a return that works for me as an extra income. But like I said, you won't quit your day job or retire off of the money you make with this method. I would be happy at $1K a month, but everyone's expectations are different. Some people probably wouldn't waste their time for that.

Re: Using Myspace Apps to Make Money
I agree, bhdan. There is potential here for Cookies, CPA, CPS, etc. There are a few blackhat suggestions in this thread, but for those interested in this I could add a few more of my own untested theories
---Popular Apps Gallery---
The Apps Gallery "Recently popular" have apps with <100 users. This indicates that a small bump in the number of installs is sufficient to make it to this page.
In theory, you could create a small number of MySpace accounts, around 90, and use a macro to make each subscribe to your app. iOpus' iMacros is a free Firefox plugin that can accomplish this. Adding an app doesn't require a captcha, so you could record the steps from login to adding the app, and use the iMacros CSV functionality to perform the action on a list of myspace usernames/passwords, without the need to use any decaptcha service.
Apply this intelligently, however. Studies show that the busiest times for blogs (and pretty much everything else on the web) are:
* Highest traffic in a month comes in the first and third weeks of a month, with more hits during the end half of a month.
* Highest traffic days of the week are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
* Highest traffic in an average day comes from 08:00 – 14:00 PST (16:00 – 22:00 GMT).
* Most comments are posted between 09:00 – 14:00 PST (16:00 – 22:00 GMT).
* People are more likely to comment on a post on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
So if you set your macros to follow this schedule, or closely before each above mentioned time, it should be no problem staying near the top of the Apps Gallery Popular list during the times where it counts. A quick refresh on that page shows 6+/- installs every few minutes for the top app. Hell, do this long enough and an editor may even take notice and put it in his picks
---Friends with benefits---
It might be best to use one of the tools available in the Downloads section of BHW to get a friend adder. They work, as long as you make your profile and invite messages believable. Getting 5k friends won't take too long, but if you take the time to do this make sure you use more than 1 account for the invites. A 5k account is nice, but 3 or 4 5k accounts are better
Once you have your friends, send a few messages and bulletins at the times listed above. You'll have more readers, and they'll be more likely to install your app. This should increase the popularity of the app and drive in more users as each of these 'friends' and their 'friends' see when the app is added.
If you're savvy enough, you should also include the OpenSocial "Share with friends" option. It's a bit tricky to do this, but it will give your app a nice "Share with your friends!" option, where they can choose up to 20 of their friends to invite.

Re: Using Myspace Apps to Make Money
Great helpful post weaselstomp, thanks for that. Although I'm not sure I'll implement or put to use any of it.
I've decided that I will try to post 3-5 apps a day or more. It looks like numbers will win for me, so I might not have but like 500-1k installs on each game, but if I eventually have around 100+ games then I should make decent money right?
Now I've got the canvas page set up perfectly how I want it with adsense and CPA offers on all 4 sides of the game. What I need help with now is some blackhat stuff, like advertising on the profile and home surfaces or something. And cookie stuffing, (if you're allowed to talk about it here). I would really like to CS down the road once I get some good info and learn about it very well so I hopefully won't get caught.

"Can I use advertising?"
You may only add advertising to the canvas page. You may not place advertisements on member profiles, homepage or application profile page.
I wouldn't suggest breaking their ToS, I don't really see any way to advertise on the Profile/Homepage and not have it noticeable by MySpace The risk would outweigh the reward I think. People are more likely to notice your ad when they play your game (on the canvas) for 20 minutes rather than visiting the profile for 15 seconds

Well I guess you're right about advertising on anything other than the canvas, it would be highly recognizable lol.
And looks like I have about 15 more days till I can visit the CS boards on here lol

Adding onto what weaselstomp said, they send an email to your main address not the ones that you used to create the app.
It's so stupid how they make you use a new email for every app you create lol.

Re: Using Myspace Apps to Make Money
Ooooh! I had an app listed in the Popular Apps section of the Apps Gallery. About 2000 installs right now, and had a few offers completed! I haven't done anything blackhat yet though (except only enabling my ads after the app was approved) Thanks bhdan!

Re: Using Myspace Apps to Make Money
nice work man.... lol placing the ads after approval aint that blackhat, they allow ads anyway they state it in their TOS hahaha
But yer just keep pumping out the apps man.....
What CPA ad did you run? PM if you wish....... because only a couple of offers completed with 2000 views? im not so sure you running the right ads.. im about to run some ads and get some apps running which will be perfect for myspace traffic, and if your running the ads i have in my mind, i will be pretty disappointed lol

I don't think it's doing that bad Just had to wait for CPA to catch up. From my ~2000 installs, I've had 277 ad clicks, and of those clicks 12 filled it out! Must be a crappy offer to only have 12, yeah?

Well, I added some invite and bulletin messaging code Seems people share better when they don't have to copy/paste a URL and send the messages themselves

And my theory on bumping your app into the popular apps section is working great!

The one where you make multiple accounts and have them add the app? I'd like to start doing this, how did you go about making all those accounts and everything?
And I have some of my apps added myself, but how come on my profile page it says like error under my installed apps and shows that I don't have any installed. Am I supposed to put something in my profile editor when I edit the apps?

Re: Using Myspace Apps to Make Money
Wonder if you can do this with mochiads games?
And of course, this same principle applies to Google Gadgets and Widgets, and other widget/gadget places.

Congrats and thanks for posting your success! I hope the other doubters and skeptics out there will realize that with a little patience there is a lot of potential here.

Well the most installs I have is 45 right now after like 3 days. How can I get my apps into the popular section faster?

Get more installs...once you get close to 100 you will jump onto the recently popular screen.

weaselstomp found a way to speed up the process somewhat. But your app will get there it just may take a little bit longer.

Re: Using Myspace Apps to Make Money
Well it's been almost a week since my apps have been up. I have a mixture of adsense image ads, adsense link ads, and CPA image ads. I've made a total of $1.03 so far lol.
I really hope my apps start to pick up this week.
