If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
If you live in a place with a shitload of people i have an idea for you.
Ok theres a ton of open source software or routers that allow you to make a hotspot to let others use your internet connection.
Now get this software or custom router and a huge ass signal booster or huge antenna and set this up to open access with a little twist.
Now with this software or atleast one i tried at home. As a test run it let me sell daily passes to use my internet for any amount i chose i tested with paypal.
Now most of the open source or paid ones let you allow certain sites what we want to do here is allow paypal. Now when they connect to your wireless access point they will get your front landing page which explains to them you can have daily access by paying $1-3 or watever you choose.
Once they fill that in they have full unlocked services and can use your internet for that 24hrs, or you could have a 3day pass and so on for extra.
Now heres where we can twist it, since most people wouldnt pay for a days access this is fine, what we can do is whitelist all your CPA url addresses even the main page just so they can fill in the offer and have them fill out a one field submit for maybe 5hrs access. You can even use GOdCPA to make something very fucking pretty or simliar.
Like enter your mobile phone number here to subscribe for 5hours, we use your mobile number to prevent people from abusing our system blahblahblah.
(The only issue here would be the same ip, but im sure if you preplan with one of your CPA affiliate managers im sure they will let you do incentivized, they allow those kiosks to do these offers in malls and stuff so why not like this)
Or you could just store there emails yourself for future marketing atleast you know it would be very targeted locally.....
Now you could use this. But again since the router or software is in full control of the hosts, and whatever sites you dont want them to view you can block. Then redirect. So options are open here too. Only problem is itll be the same IP. Im sure we can work around that easy.
Another example here is going to www.conduit.com creating a toolbar, and making them install the toolbar (or other similar www.**********************) (i will not talk ppi here as we dont allow it and once installed allow them access.
The options are endless you could charge, or even use sms reverse billing for to bill them.
If you lived in a block where theres like 10k students running about with laptops if 100 people bought a days access at $1 thats $100 profit,
The options are endless just an idea if you profited from one you could start planting them in shopping malls, schools, you get the idea.
Proxies would and could be a solution to CPA's or make them signup to ebay or anything who knows im not very awake right now but just an idea.
P.S apologies if this makes no sense, havent properly slept in days and hungover and its late

Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
Well think of it this way too, how many caravan parks could do with wifi access and dont have it.
If u stayed at a caravan park the weekend and knew they did wifi access for $10-20 for the weekend would u purchase i know i would. That or doing some offers or something similar.
Let your creativity go wild.
Think of a simple idea one that popped into my head is.......
Where do people go and wait a long time. Hmmmm taxi depots, womans clothes stores.
Now imagine a big shopping store that is a place for girls to shop, how many husbands boyfriends hate that crap. Now how much does 5-10 cheap computers cost ? $2000 or so you could probably and broadband in there.
Now setup these computers like you would in an internet cafe, i bet a ton of shops would take up your idea as a waiting chillout internet room for males to waste there time while there gfs shop. Charge them access. If they pay for 1hr that keeps them in the store for 1hr = more shopping = more profit for store and you.
Not only that another idea would be coin operated music jukeboxes with headphones for husbands to chillout. 1dollar a song link it up to automate purchasing on itunes, to stay legal, when they pay there dollar it loads up your own custom itunes player they search and buy one song, even if its already on your system you own legal rights for it to be played in that one computer right ? So dont buy it again just profit the dollar.
Ideas like these flow through my head in an hourly basis.

I dont know about uni's. My uni has free wireless internet access. What legal issues helloall? I guess you would probably have to jv with the airport/uni/shopping mall etc.
Ah thanks harro your second post gave me a better grasp on the idea. Tis a grand idea. Just for fun, i will come up with some plans.
Im thinking of those game rooms, timeout zones, but a small group of computers.

Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
How about building a cheap van that sits in a busy place in a city center with a few car batterys linked up in the back and having every phone charger possible and sell people quick emergency charges ?
Imagine a drunken girl its 1am after the clubs shut and she needs to text her boyfriend to pick her up, theres phonebooths but she doesnt know his number but has it in her mobile phone.
Now she owns a nokia, since most nokias use the same charger cheap for you to charge them all, buy like 5 of them incase its a rush and charge her $10 or so rip them off, people that need shit bad will pay.
Not only a van this could work if u made little kiosks in shopping centers too, airports, and anywhere where people could not have access to a phone charger.
You could automate it if you built a coin operated system i guess that loads up the power for that slot for 10 mins when u stick 5bux in or something.

Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
IN New Zealand (And i assume elsewhere aswell) There is things called "Tomizones". Where basically, they supply you with a router and a shit tonne of software to run it on. And basically people pay to leech your internet (Has a download cap). And you get like 60% of the profits or something.
If you are in the middle of the city its pure gold. Mostly because if you go with them and although your only taking 60%. You get a tonne more because its a new zealand wide thing. So they pay for a weeks usage and then go use it all over the country they dont have to stay on your particular connection.

For game rooms and related wouldnt you need to have a buisness license and building.
It wouldnt be your premises this is why i said to make deals with the shop owners as it would keep shoppers in there place until the time runs out.
Its up to them if they allow you or not. There business there business license your just providing them with a revenue sharing project i guess, or they might let you do it free since its helping them out.

Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
Nice idea with the charger harro, though it be cheaper to go poundland and buy the battery one with the adapters, and sell it onto the for a £5, 400% profit. May try it next wednesday
In terms of the Internet, there was a company on Dragon's den last year that does that for Mariners, so when the yacht berths they can get wireless internet, they have an international membership programme too! Just think if we set up a wireless point in Every Greyhound station!

Yes about the marina wireless connections, i used to pay for it until i got 3g/HDSPA

Yeh the poundland one is a good idea too you could work this idea with bars too, and you know those dispensors, like coke and shit, sell them in that i guess

There

We have that in New Zealand already inside the malls. And its at our theme parks elsewhere (New Zealand looks like its ahread in tech stakes :P). Basically all the main chargers like a couple of ericson ones and nokia etc. And its like 5 bucks for a 10-15 minute charge. And they are located next to coffee places so you buy a coffee while your waiting.
On trademe here (New Zealands ebay). Someone was offering it as a franchise option in whatever area you lived. But it was something like a 50k buy in.

Thanks pyronaut, didnt know we had that in new zealand.
If you want a good signal booster it may just cost you $100's or $1000's:
Code:

Edit:
I looked into tomizone. You could offer to pay for the business' internet connection, computers, and routers. (Knowing a good electronics dropshipper will be useful) You could also pay them monthly to have your service there. Or you could do as they say and sell them the technology and use tomizone as a selling point.

for at least 3 years nearly all newpaper kiosks here in NYC US have had a variety of phone chargers available for emergency use for a few bucks. It's a great idea.

Dicksmith electronics (New Zealand electronics store) has massive aerials for wireless connections. Well not massive, but maybe a foot - a foot and and a half long. I have one that is fairly large and i manager to pick up other networks that are quite a distance away. Mine cost 50 NZD and i think the ones they sell now are 80 bucks.
Tomizone is fairly cool. After reading harro's post i was actually going to give it a go for a week and see if anyone in my apartment building would use it. But dont have the correct router.

Call me a pussy . But im weary of using 3rd party firmware on my router. Bad experiences in the past. Not to mention, most are paid so would be getting a crack. Any one software you reccomend harro?

Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
There was a free one i sampled a while ago, it didnt do much to the router, and was quite safe and had paypal, 2co and other payment gateways built in, it was pretty damn good

Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
I actually did this a few years ago. There's hotspot software you can download. What I did was leech of a neighbor's internet connection on one router and sold the connection on the other. I also had my own I use for my own only.
There was a software available from microsoft awhile back that would let you bridge several wireless connections into one, like a mesh.
I moved on since then.

Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
Not a bad idea really, but there are a few other ways to make money other than selling access. Free wifi is getting so much play that it's almost everywhere now, and what you need to do is figure out some way to make it work for you. Here's how I've been doing it.
There are several firmware/company options that you can use to inject an ad into a users session. I've had experience using silver lining networks firmware on cheap linksys routers. They have several different ad formats (skyscraper, leaderboard, etc) that are persistent across your users session. You can run your own adserver (or use hosted openx or whatever) to serve ads into this space. Hit up local business to advertise on your network. Our pitch is that it lets them market to a captive audience with spending $$$ to burn. Users are tech savvy and have expendable income. You should be able to get $100+ per month per ad sold easy if your network is in a popular place.
Put the ads on a 30-45 second rotation and all these small business could get 20k-30k banner impressions for their money. You could even insert their site into a small iframe in the banner so it looks like they are getting hits too!
You can also run your own ads (cpa offers, email submits, etc) if you have unsold inventory. Or, those of you that have cookie type tendencies could roll with that and make some bank. Your network can't see the traffic as they are not surfing on your network. If/when they ask, all you say is that you are running the banner on an ad supported wireless network. I lucked out my first couple months with this, and had a couple users buy cars through one of my banners. That was a nice commission.
Good thread Harro!

Yes the only thing here you have to worry about is the same ip address ofcourse so if you can think of a way around that or a method to grab there emails and information you could sell the lists, or think of other ideas.
-
-
Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
Once our network folks found out that we were running our own adserver (that's the IP that the hits show from), we had no trouble. Ours is still a pretty small network (only about 60 blocks or so; 25-30k ad impressions/day), so we may still be below the radar for some networks. Haven't been harvesting emails yet. It would be pretty easy to put a form up on our landing page though. "please enter your email address and agree to our TOS to continue"
I just wish I could get more users to click the ads so I wasn't so dependent on the extra snippets of code.

good method. lol, you just reminded me... im a former taxi driver and i used to offer an in car wifi network to business customers on long distance runs. i used 'pay as you go' mobile broadband and a special mobile broadband router. I charged £15 for access which i often didnt make money on but it paid for a whole month of mobile broadband for me
-
-
Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
You can rig your router to a huge satellite dish and place repeaters at your friends houses to dominate. Remember the stronger you signal strength the high it shows up.
Also you could set it up so it works for 3 minutes for free for a mac address and then bang time to pay mofo.
The real smart way to do it would be to knock out all the other wireless networks in the area so only your own works. Obviously i'm not going to share that info with you.
-
-
Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
This idea could be expanded on in certain areas (and potentially fix the single IP issue) though the use of open mesh hardware. There are WRT54GL firmwares that do open mesh as well with a splash page and all. Most allow you to customize that page to have whatever you want on it and have the paypal portal for X number of days at X cost.
Tomato is a good wrt54gl firmware, but i don't know if it allows for monetization.
Going another step further, you could do the mesh with completely stolen wifi if your mesh area has enough easily crackable access points. this would also provide a rollover in case one node went down.
it should be noted that the use of high powered antennas will improve this considerably and provide a better service.
i researched all of this a while back, but i live too far away from civilization to really do anything with it profitable (would take me months to even pay off the hardware)
-
-
Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
We're actually using the open-mesh gear for our network. That and a WRT54GL with firmware to inject the ads where ever we hook into bandwidth.
-
-
Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
Yeti, can you give some info on your setup? You say you cover 60 blocks. How many WRT54GL's do you have setup?
-
-
Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
Sure thing. Right now, we're using about 5 WRT54GLs (running firmware from Silver Lining Networks) at various spots around the city and roughly 90 of the open mesh nodes. Also have a few ubiquity power/nano stations for doing some longer range links. This has let us get a single large line (16mb from Comcrap) and beam out bandwidth to places where we need/want gateways. This way, we can cancel some of our spread out DSL lines and save some cash.
The WRT54GLs handle the ad insertion stuff for us, and are pulling ads from an openx ad server we're running. This way, we can run ads for local businesses or whatever.
That enough info?

Wow I like this idea. Unfortunately I just sold my condo and moved away from at least 10 - 60 unit condo buildings and now not really living around too many people to make this worth while. However the technique is very interesting indeed.

Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
Very interesting idea, a lot of hotel chains have something similar to this in place. It's a real money earning if you have a targetted audidence, for example hotels, people traveling like to use the internet to use e-mail instead of text/phone calls because of the rate and they can e-mail family etc.

WOW, this could actually be really cool, you could use this at universities- set up a network and clone the universities network name and login page and iframe a email submit etc for login. Could probably make a small fortune before getting shut down. I can't imagine in a small section of a school how many students are logging on/off at all hours of the day.

Man I thought I had a unique idea here...I'm currently planning something very similar to this...in the next month or so I will have some happy neighbors and I will have a happier bank account...

Sweet way of thinking. You can make a CanTenna or modify a cable dish. Small or large. Routers can me modified just as easy. There are instruction videos on YouTube. Hmm, even if you live in someplace like a trailor park you could just take cash!

Re: If you live in a big city or apartment, or uni
Is it possible to make this work using a Alfa wifi adapter stealing the neighbors net and then using a router to make my computer an access point?
or what about using a verizon air card with a laptop and then use a wifi adapter that has the capability to turn the laptop into a Access point? that way you can go all around town with it offering access.
There's a million ways to shine, choose one

Yes, it is possible with the Alfa (i own one too). Some time ago i used the Alfa as the steal card and another less powerful as access point in my house. There was software that did that under Windows and is pretty easy to use, just google "software access point". WEP cracking done under BackTrack.
I don't know what verizion is, but cracking a WEP key takes 5 minutes, so yes, you could do that also. Now days there a netbooks running for more than 6 hours but 2 wifi card is lots of power consumption. But you could park your car in some crowded area, crack a near wifi, plug in the laptop and go for drinks
I might do a tute these days covering the WEP cracking. Anyone needs it?
