    Default Google’s Destroying SEO

The day every SEO has feared has finally arrived. Google has successfully pushed organic search results below the fold for certain popular queries, leaving only paid ads and Google’s own properties. How should SEO’s respond to this?

The article is about the eCommerce area - not about the SEO itself - and yes Google is protecting his own interest in this field. How can you blame a shoes producer for promoting his own shoes ? If Google is having his own eCommerce Hotel - how do you think that he'll promote an out source

Well google is a private company and they will do what's best for them. I personally feel that they are doing it good to the visitors like for eg if you search for terms like

"How to get rid of acne" - You will find the best deals from all ecommerce sites in your country. which is pretty good as a surfer..

Even try out other search terms like "best car speakers" or "buy whey protien" etc.

They have even started to quote articles in the search for cure terms like "how to get rid of stretch marks"..(google it).

But you cant say SEO is dead..people still click on those Blue links from 1 to 10 no matter what google does on the top section of their search.

Adjustments may have to be made, and ultimately, if Google delivers bad results as a consequence of the push for profits, then it'll be Bing's turn! SEOs will then focus on Bing or whatever other SE is going to be the surfers' favorite.

I don't like reading posts about Google being unfair, it's their free business decision, they are not violating laws or breaking agreements. As we know, it could bring them down sooner or later, the success of Google was also built on their non-profit concept, the more they drift away, the more opportunities for other non-profit ventures. They should do what they want, at their own risk, this is America, not China, at least for now!

Google's act is going against Google's policy and ethics to give user best search result and all those animal updates to prevent spam and blackhat link building. What ever they speak for they are actually a giant business organization doing monopoly business on net.

SEO isn't dead. Whether these new updates negatively effect user experience is debatable and whether Google can maintain an effective monopoly over SEO is questionable. What people don't realize is that the goal posts are constantly moving, back in the day guys were probably getting all uppity when Google stopped people ranking when they had a perfect keyword density. The game changes, the best players will always be in the premier league.

    Nope.
It is not just ecommerce. There are many other searches where google is doing this.

Do a simple search for attraction in "your city name". Example, do a search for New York City Attractions.
Are you seeing those images on top?

Now the worst thing is, google is stealing the content from other websites(images) to increase their credibility.
If you look at the above search result page, you could probably see the image of Statue of Liberty. This image doesn't belong to google. Not even public domain. It is pulled from google images.

Now, Click on the image. It will take you to another google page where they show the results for the search term statue of liberty. The site which provided the image to google is nowhere listed in the first page.

On the right side, google generates a summary of "statue of liberty" including the first image. Normal users wouldn't bother to click on the image again. Even if you click on the image listed on right, google opens it in another window above the actual web page featuring the image.

In short google is stealing images from other websites without even giving them proper credit. And display the image in such way that the above fold is filled with adwords and useful content is pushed way down.

Imagine we doing this on our site... Google is an effing hypocrite.

SEO is not dead but they keep slowly squeezing organic out of the picture, not sure how far the public will put up with it. They have gotten too big that's for sure, and gotten away from the don't be evil mindset, now it's about squeezing pennies and the bottom line. There is a difference between being a business and being a monopoly that owns a majority of an industry, there is a reasons there are laws against that. But when you have lobbyists and own most of the politicians, things work a little different for you.

No no no! SEO is not dead, SEO won't die out because Google's value is in its organic listings. Thats why peopel trust google. Without organic, no one would use the rest of it anyways.

Imagine you walk into a shop looking for information before making a purchase.
The shop ONLY shows you one brand.
Eventually you go to another shop.

Google understands this - if you want to try and rank for VERY commercial short tail terms - Google is monopolizing those.
But as soon as people see Google has turned from "Search Engine" to "Massive advertisement for itself" they will just go to their internet options and change their default SE to something else.

I mean once a search engine fails to search for anything other than itself - it's not a search engine anymore, you're just choosing to see the adverts a privately owned corporation wants to show you.

Do you have an "emotional involvement" in using Google?
No? - neither does anyone else.

Google are walking a tightrope. They are THE brand name and have been for 13 years. Before that no-one thought Yahoo could lose...or IBM would ever lose the PC market, or Hoover would not be the leading vacuum cleaner manufacturer or Ford would be such a crap car manufacturer ... Free markets don't like massive unbalanced weights in them for long - they always get corrected eventually.

Google is showing too much hubris "do what we like" attitude, but no one (well maybe 0.0001% of their users) gives a fuck about them. If another company did a better job - and Google just presented you with pages of their own ads? People would move quick, and Google would be right roytally fucked

Key thing here is No-one has ANY emotional involvement with them. No one would care if they went tomorrow. Couple that with providing a less than satisfactory service to your key customers who only use you out of habit - when there are better alternatives they could switch to in 20 seconds... That's a precarious place for Google to be.

I see so much junk in the first half page of my Google searches nowdays its ridiculous. Worst part is the junk is from Google!

Microsoft has been trying for years to make a dent with bing. Have you seen their advertisements? They give Google free promo by trying to talk shit to hem and then they still have a junk search engine.

lol. I'm done with SEO. If they want to index and rank the pages, I'm fine with that but I'm not gonna chase them and abide by their rules, I've tried hard multiple times trying to please them but in the end, they just piss on me. I remember when they released a major algorithm update which killed a lot of innocent business.

hardcorebiker, I think you are way off on this one and missing the point.

Many "how to" queries are returning results that give recommendations. Try searching for how to treat migraines as an example. Google stole the answers from places like the Mayo Clinic, etc. While this may be acceptable for users, places like the Mayo Clinic are losing traffic because Google took it upon themselves to take their content and display it in such a way that fewer people will visit Mayo Clinic's website.

This is another example of Google taking someone else's content and using it in ways that they have not given permission for. First it starts out as a small quoted snippet, next a paragraph then the whole damn article. We are talking about Google here, and they obviously want to assimilate our content for their financial gain. I call this a violation of copyright laws.

Quote Originally Posted by hardcorebiker View Post

SEO is not dead, but Google is definitely trying to cause it some serious damage. The reason why they are doing this is quite simple. Google wants more Adwords users. The more people that Google can convert into believing SEO is dead the more people that are likely to spend money on Adwords. The goal? Possibly Google simply becoming a bid engine in the near future. Shit half of Google's search pages are already halfway there with organic listings stuffed beneath the fold.

In their attack on SEO, Google is also using their market dominance to instill fear about linking to other sites and those sites that link to ours. This fear is resulting in millions of link takedown requests and is wasting the time of many people/businesses. While the link removal process tosses SEO companies a bone, as it's another service that they can offer, fewer links means the average user is more dependent on a search product.

Google has no halo above their corporate headquarters. Because Google enjoys a special relationship with the government, by handing over private information to the NSA, don't expect any other government agencies in the United States to get in their way. In fact, Eric Schmidt of Google is pals with President Obama and has been to the White House many of times. With buddies like that, Google is pretty much free to steamroll entire industries that depend on a digital presence by holding them hostage to overpriced Adwords ads if they want any type of visibility in Google.

Agree with that. Didn't look at it from that angle. It really looks like Google is stealing content(Not sure if they have taken permission) and trying to keep the visitors as close to the ads since they probably dont wan't them to scroll down. I am sure in coming years google will start quoting websites articles the same way which would suck!

If the search results are degraded by Google's blatant profit mongering then consumers will learn to use another search engine. That combined with concerns with privacy could happen faster than you realize. Everything changes in life including who is king!

Interesting point about stealing content that Neo and others have mentioned.

I searched for 'London top attractions' and got the same black bar a the top. The first image I checked the source of (London Eye) is pretty much guaranteed to be a stolen image from somewhere - even if it has a CCL there is no attribution.

This isn't a simple Google Image search - Google have curated these photos and are presenting them almost as if it were a magazine. A lot of other photos are from Wikipedia - absolutely no guarantee of no IP infringement there.

If Google want sections of their website to look like a bloody magazine then they should act like one and pay for the content.

    Rant over

Perhaps we should all start watermarking our images with "Google Sucks!"

    Scritty
Scritty have my LIKES again, couldn't agree more than this.

it is just too much of a human nature to not trusting Advertisement, people use GOOGLE for what? Content? information? aint those what GOogle have always been whining about? "oh you gotta put up the good content, so you will have authority from us!"

For big short tails keywords, even if google don't put their own advertisement up, are you confident you can outrank those big company? are you sure you can outrank all the SEO experts across the worl

Man google cannot live without organic traffic, that is how Google hold their ground, so man.

INSTEAD OF WORRYING ABOUT THE END OF SEO, WE SHOULD SPEND MORE TIME ON OPTIMIZING AND BUILDING OUT SITES STRONG AND BULLET PROOF.

I don't do much SEO so this doesn't bother me, but I can say from user's point of view the search results from google totally suck. I've been noticing that for the past year and it's getting worse. I'm testing bing, yahoo and DDG to find a replacement for google and nothing seems to be good enough. I'm probably gonna have to build my own search engine

I don't think ordinary people are too concerned about their privacy. This is unfortunate, but the outcry following the NSA snooping revelations were quite limited.

Governments have a desire to collect information on their citizens. As with most political structures, those in charge have an appetite to gain more power and control over the citizenry. By using Google and other private sector businesses, governments are able to use them as a proxy in their quest to collect even more data. Should Google Glasses take off, as an example, Google and the government will be able to expand its data collection well beyond digital to digital communications.

I've long said Google was positioning itself to enter the defense industry. Data mining is their expertise, and I would not be surprised at all if taxpayer dollars were already flowing to Google to expand their data collection and sharing capabilities. If this is not happening now, you can bet it will happen in the very near future.

Peoples perception of Google are changing
Their motto of do no harm, is starting to be tarnished

Governments are starting to look at google as the monopoly it is
Their main power lies in their control over American politicians

But their biggest problem is their sharholders
Your only as good as your last financial report
Google shareholders have become used to share prices and dividends rising year on year

To keep doing this, they need to become more aggressive with each year
Which is what they are now doing.

People will become ad blind in the end and will skip them

The proof that this is already happening is the fact that google feel it necessary to take
control of everything above the fold. In fact I've heard rumors that the 3rd place ads are out performing
    the top 2

In the end this will be their biggest problem.
    Where do they go next
remove Organic search from the 1st page

And when/if they do that, that's probably the point people will really start noticing. I can see Bing or some new player exploiting that heavily in future ad campaigns, if it ever happens.

I agree with all that you are saying but perceptions and sentiments can change quickly and really how much are you really losing if you use a different Search Engine? Hell , I saw the very same transition happen seemingly overnight with the move to Google.

Google results have been crap for a while now, it's only a matter of time before they become the very tool of their own demise.
