Does Google's first impression "stick"?

I am planning a little "experiment" on one of my websites.

Say I build 500 links manually or carefully with software, high quality links. And then slowly start switching to bulk links, what would happen?

Would google's first impression stick, and would my backlink numbers just add to the serps?

From experience do you any of you know about this?

It used to work up until Penguin. Now you gotta stay away from what they call "bad neighborhoods" which as far as I know can mean anything. Basically Google has a loose cannon pointing anywhere.

Google is not like going on a date, first impression doesn't mean jack. If you start doing crappy SEO, you're going to get crappy results no matter how good a "first impression" you made.

Well I guess it sort of is like dating, as if you turn out to be an a$$hole later (ie start building spammy bulk links) you'll eventually get dumped (ie drop in SERPs) no matter how you start off.
 
Google's been "devaluing" links instead of them having a negative impact. They won't kill your site but they won't benefit it either. I use these "GSA quality" links on my sites to diversify link type and the anchors.

I hope Google doesn't trend towards penalizing sites for RECEIVING links, like they seem to be planning to do. Negative SEO will be the new industry, as it already is booming in some niches(I heard on the street).

yeah everyone has been saying all the time that negative SEO won't happen, but it looks like they are moving towards there. What I think is they might have certain metrics to decide whether negative SEO will have any effect on that particular site or not. Like if your site is large enough or have many good backlinks than a lot of negative SEO won't do anything to it, whereas if your site is only a few pages with no backlinks then those bad links will hurt you a lot.
