Default [Case]High anchor text ratio on 1 keyword reduces rankings of similar competeing keywords

I noticed an interesting effect recently from a site I used the SAPE network on.

I launched a website last December covering a large topic which required many keyword targeted pages. After a few weeks I launched a SAPE campaign targeting one of the core keywords. Each SAPE link, all 150 of them had the same anchor text. What I noticed is that Google increased the overall ranking of the site, more specifically the target keyword. However, I noticed that a lot of other keywords begun dropping off.

I personally believe this to be a case of weighted relevancy. I believe the site to have become lopsided concerning relevancy. The anchor text likely told Google that the site was super specific to that keyword and as a result other keywords begun dropping.

Other evidence which strongly suggests this is the case is that weeks after removing the SAPE links, the keywords which dropped off actually begun increasing in rank until I now had a nice balanced level of ranking across all keywords.

This is nothing to do with SAPE as a specific service, this is about how Google might treat relevancy of a site based on anchor text. If all of your anchor text and high value links specify "Blue widgets" then it could be that "Red widgets", while still relevant, is pushed out because of the overweighted relevancy your backlink profile is giving to "Blue widgets".

So in your opinion using the same anchor for a lot of high pr sape links can push your website for that keyword and decrease it for your other keywords ? not sure if i got it right..

What I experienced with the site in question was an increase in one keyword and a drop off in others. Some dropped below 500 places which were once moving towards the top 50. After removing all of the links form SAPE which happened to have all the same anchor text, the keywords that dropped off, came back and are under position 30 now I believe.

SAPE has nothing to do with it except for providing High PR links with all the same anchor text. It could have been any links with high PR and all the same anchor text.

I do think that the fact they were all pumping lots of PR into the site might have something to do with how Google trusted and put more weight on the anchor text.

If they were 150 PR 0 links there may not have been the same affect, so maybe the PR of a link has an effect on how weight the anchor text is in terms of relevancy. It would make sense, but i'm just speculating.

None so far. There are a lot of people using SAPE and it seems like there has not been a penalty for the over-optimisation of anchor text(i dont remember being asked if i wanted to cary anchor text so i dont think you can). Again, the PageRank of the links might have something to do with that.

60% anchor text ratio and all links are PR2-6 is different from all PR 0 i assume.

    Very useful info.

I've always believed that Google relies heavily (sometimes to heavily) on offsite signals to determine the theme of an entire domain instead of the domain's actual content. What you have noted in this thread certainly supports this theory.
