About how many backlinks would a keyword term need if it is being searched 550,000 times

you need to look at the top 10 and see their PRs, their backlinks, and see if you can out compete them.

Nah, In all seriousness though, get a VPN, and use it to make about 100 fake people, sign them up for social media sites and give them all some free blogs then just have those people republish + backlink to the site you want to promote and then give some social media shares to your proxy blogs and that should help a bit.

Keyword competition is not based on searches per month, it involves WAY MORE variables. With the information given it's impossible to determine how difficult would be to rank a website.
In addition, the # of backlinks has nothing to do with the actual rankings. 1 quality link is better than 100,000 {spammy|shitty|poor} backlinks.

You need to look at how competitive the term is in terms of competition as well to give you a better idea. Medium does not give too much info on your competition. Run through their backlink profiles and see what sort of links they've built up in order to be competitive. That should give you a good idea of what it would take to rank for the term. From there try to replicate their link building efforts.

Install seoquake toolbar in firefox and search your keyword on google, then underneath each search result seoquake will show you info about your competitor's domain like: pr, pages indexed, alexa rank, domain age etc. This wealth of info will give you an idea about the competition you're facing.
Find your competitor's backlinks by using seo spyglass(you can find it in the download section), this will give you an idea of how your competitors are bulding their links, their link divertsity, anchor text variation etc
Read the various ranking case studies given in the forum, backlinking strategies etc, you've got a wealth of resources here to follow
And once you're equipped with all this info, go for an aggressive backlinking campaign and watch your site rise the serps

So you need more than that to out rank them. Plus you should have more and better content. Now you outrank them. Easy isn't it? Now to find those PR 5 links, that's another story. Blog comments don't work like they used to. They still work for all the sites that already have them from a while ago, but if you start acquiring High PR blog comments from unrelated niches, you greatly risk PR manipulation penalty. So what's left? If you're serious about outranking for that keyword, you're going to have to buy high PR domains and throw niche related blogs on those, backlink them, and have a homepage link to your money site... Done.
