Default Matt Cutts: The Next Penguin Update Will Be Big

Yesterday, At SES San Francisco during the Matt Cutts keynote, Matt answered some questions about the Penguin update that has many SEOs and webmaster shaking in their boots.

As you know, many SEOs are eagerly awaiting a Penguin update but Matt Cutts, the head of search spam at Google, said "you don’t want the next Penguin update." He warned that the Google "engineers have been working hard," on this update.

He even added the next few updates will be "jarring and Jolting" for webmasters and SEOs.

If you're doing things the right way, I strongly believe you'll be fine, even with these updates. Although this is a black hat community, the right content on your website goes a long way. To echo what everybody else said, adapt to it and MOST internet marketers will be fine

There will always be a legit service here in BHW that will have results no matter what update so... They SEO masters will go crazy but around in 2 months they will test, fail, test, fail, test and success.

Google don't want to give you free traffic why would they?

If I was running google I would want the results to show different but relevant results every time someone searched, that way no website will get free traffic for a long period and everyone will eventually be forced to pay for it.

There is no shortage of relevant unique sites so why would they let one site stay on top all the time? It doesn't make sense from a business point of view, what they are doing with these updates is just shuffling the results so noone gets enough free traffic to survive without paying them for it.

IMO SEO is a waste of time, there are far better, quicker and more productive ways of getting traffic without having your business torn apart every month or so by this guy.

Its already clear that the top few spots on google are not drawing as many clicks as they used to - With the new changes then do you think Google will be focusing more on advertisement positions and pushing organic down way below the fold??

It pretty much is in most niches.

Matt Cutts must be an insecure individual for getting off on scare tactics.

I bet, maybe not this update , but sometime soon, Google will target unnatural do follow backlinks. Nofollow has been out for awhile. I am willing to bet there will be a do follow/nofollow threshold ratio, like anchor text.

Jarring and jolting? Sounds like the point of this is to deter IMers from BH more than it actually goes after BH.

Panda and Penguin have done jack shit... type in any competitive keyword and check out the backlinks. Sites with invisible footer links are still ranking all over the place.

Panda/Penquin is a means to scare IMers away from black hat. That's a lot easier than an automatic algo that doesn't unfairly punish good sites.
I've used TheBestSpinner, Spinner Chief, WordAI, SpinChimp, SpinRobot... honestly none compare to this one. 99% unique, CS passed, double nested article re-writes with a click. I use it on almost half my money sites now. Feel free to PM me with questions before you buy.

Don't forget that we also benefit Google as most of us use Google Adsense as revenue.

And Google don't admit traffic from paid advertisement if you have adsense on your website, they just accept natural traffic from search engines and users links.

Yawn....if google really wanted to do away with seo they would simply:
    A. Remove the importance of backlinks. do follow, no follow, who cares. Stop any benefit from backlinks of any kind.
    B. Remove any indexing value of Emd's

    By doing this:
    A. Google could concentrate on algorithms that tested content quality SOLEY removing spun or overtly optimised pages from high rankings. Shouldn't be too hard to come up with better algorithms to do this.

    B. Rely more heavily on bounce rates to justify a sites position. Those with poor bounce rates will lose ranking. Tied in with a sites content this would mean that all sites are relevant to searchers on top pages.

Till google does this simple tidy up, I will have to believe that we are playing a game of cat and mouse that suits google as it leaves just enough doors open to allow us all to keep sites in its search engine, whilst tidying up certain, not all, aspects of its engine.

Well eventually you get to the point as an engineer where there's an upside and a downside. They can only damage control aspects of SEO that have seemingly immediate effects to ranking and drawing in traffic.

Example: Maybe these Google engineers target a type of page structure strategy that brings in immediate traffic for keyword terms.. or a type of content, or a type of backlink content, or a combination of all. Regardless, there needs to be certain indicators that the "SEOers" use to accomplish positive SEO results which is somewhat at the expense of Google.

Google has already demonstrated a few things
    1) Google doesn't like SEO
    2) Anchor text - all the "SEOers" are repeating similar anchor text
    3) Content on backlinked pages - if you're going for positive SEO from link structures & spin content on all those backlink sources you are trying "SEO"

    Note:
--This is based on widespread seo information - There may be quick investments that work, such as 301 redirects.
--A quality established domain may trump the entire thing.

Negative SEO? Spam may just be null - who knows, maybe faking positive SEO on another website is the way to go.

Either way, Google will never win the game, unless it's at the expense of the users.

Again shit gets blown out of proportion

    He clarified his remarks later:

Hey Barry, I wasn't saying that people needed to overly stress out about the next Penguin update, but I'm happy to give more details. I was giving context on the fact that lots of people were asking me when the next Penguin update would happen, as if they expected Penguin updates to happen on a monthly basis and as if Penguin would only involve data refreshes.

If you remember, in the early days of Panda, it took several months for us to iterate on the algorithm, and the Panda impact tended to be somewhat larger (e.g. the April 2011 update incorporated new signals like sites that users block). Later on, the Panda updates had less impact over time as we stabilized the signals/algorithm and Panda moved closer to near-monthly updates.
Likewise, we're still in the early stages of Penguin where the engineers are incorporating new signals and iterating to improve the algorithm. Because of that, expect that the next few Penguin updates will take longer, incorporate additional signals, and as a result will have more noticeable impact. It's not the case that people should just expect data refreshes for Penguin quite yet.

Just read his response a few times to dig a little deeper. As always, take what Matt Cutts says with a grain of salt, but notice that multiple times he mentions "adding new signals" in his response. I think this is a huge takeaway into focusing in more diversity with link building and also moving more into a social direction. Not to sound like a broken record, but it sounds like Matt is giving us some hints here as to what this update is going to accomplish. Diversify!

Isn't it said that Google updates their algorithm ... every 17 hours?

Just adapt and give them what they want and you won't have to worry as much .

what he means is that they are going to hire an additional 10K Indians, on top of the 50K they already have, to manually de-index sites.

Mobile's sort of the new Google Labs, so I'd expect the next update to be less algorithm-oriented and more a convergence of semantic results and combined media, sort of along the lines of the knowledge graph results previews you see for stuff with wikipedia entries.

I think they are able focused only on backlinks (anchors) schemes... I remember Panda - my sites were penalized for fact, that other people stole my original content.
    G engineers are insane idi0ts ...

Sorry (I guess), but someone really should say this: there are an amount of certifiably delusional people in this forum as regards Penguin and what its aim is that can only be described as infuriating to anyone who has genuinely tried to warn people here, while having no ulterior motive in so doing. Further, more often than not, when someone is not delusional (or an ignoramus), they're talking out their ass with petulant, 'feel-good' jibber-jabber like calling Matt Cutts names and staring at the D-Day what is right in front of them -- like Don Quixote in front of a windmill.

If there is anything, that anyone with even a small power of perception, is able to glean from anything at all that Matt Cutts says, it is that he shoots off at the mouth with a sophomoric confidence typical to all engineers: the first thing he says is as close to accurate that he will ever say; later, he 'clarifies'.

The Doomsday algorithm for SEOs will be one or another iteration of this fucking Penguin, guys. Get your house in order; prepare other income streams. Do it yesterday.

You may be right but i have a site with no social signals on it thats gone from 70 visitors p/d to over 500 p/d bypassing all Panda/Penguin over the past 6 months. It ranks for 271 keywords with 80% of them on the first page of google. Many say that social signals are already part of the past updates but i have none and yet rank very highly for my niche.

lol - Google is going no where. People don't have time to change their homepages from Google to Bing or any SE.

They are getting the information they need (they think) and they are right too most of the times. Even all my family members/friends are using Google and they don't even said me a single time that Google is crap. Its only we, webmasters say this.

SEO will remain alive but just evolve.

But it is very doable decision to start learning PPC since Google is making SEO harder.
