I was reading through this great thread over here about making 40k a month with email lists and what not and I got thinking about a few things. Mainly,
A) I don't want to spend any money gathering these leads
B) I don't want to ask someone if they will email their list to join MY list
And
C) I want the leads to be targeted to my niche.
That lead me to a few conclusions. The first being that forums are probably the best places to gather emails/leads because these are people who have signed up to a forum to talk about one specific topic. The second being that I could use this to my advantage to gather large amounts of emails from people who are already interested in whatever product I wish to promote and thirdly, I can use Scrapebox to accomplish this.
So you've got a product you want to promote and a niche in mind, let's get started.
I'm just going to use BHW for this example.
First step is to go into Scrapebox and search for forums in your niche.Under the keyword put [your niche niche] forums. Use the Footprint "Powered by vBulletin" or any other footprint you like for forums. This one works well for me.
So your Scrapebox should look something like this. Feel free to run a Remove/filter pass if you wish to weed out any URLs that may not contain your keyword.
Next, pick a target on that list. Any target. The one thing you're looking for here is that the forum has a members list. Pretty much all good forums have one so you should be able to find them easily enough.
BHWs is just http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/memberlist.html
Have a little click through some of the page numbers to get an understanding of how the sites URL structure works. This is very important as we'll be using this as a footprint later.
So for example, BHWs is http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/memberlist-91.html for page 91 or 70 for page 70 and so on.
To be extra thorough, hover over the letter in the sort member list by letter option that most forums have and take note of that URL structure too.
For example, to go to the start of members whos names start with D in BHW it's http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/memberlist-d1.html This too can be used as a footprint.
Right, back to Scrapebox with our new information. For our next footprint, we want to use something like this
site:http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/memberlist-*.html
This is going to be dependent on how the forum you chose URL system works. What this footprint basically does is it searches the specific site for URLs that are similar to /memberlist-*.html
So this particular footprint looks for /memberpage-1.html, /memberpage-2.html, /memberpage-3.html and so on. Essentially what we're doing here is getting links to all of the memberlist pages.
This is why it's important to take note of how the URL system for your particualr forum works, other wise you'll get a bung footprint.
Let's be more thorough though.
Take those links you just harvested and chuck them into the link extractor addon, select internal links only and let it run. From 14 links I now have 800.
Export them as a .txt and then reimport them backinto Scrapebox. Run another Remove/Filter pass with "URLs not containing" and then insert whichever URL structure your forum was using. BHWs was just memberlist.
Now I have a list of 200+ member pages. Each of these pages has about 30 or so users on it. So that's...a lot of users. If you want even more, simply repeat that previous process of putting it through the link extractor addon.
Now you have two options.
First, with your list of memberlist pages you can do a remove/filter pass and do a "Remove URLs not containing" What you want to do here is put in the URL structure for INDIVIDUAL USER PAGES.
BHW uses the link structure http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/members/[userID]-[membername] So in this case I'd run a filter to get rid of any links that don't contain the /member/ part of the URL, thus giving me only links to individual profile pages. Then just run it through the email harvester and voila, it harvest everons emails who have it included in their profile.
OR (and I much rather prefer this metod)
Grab a copy of Atomic Email Hunter and with the list you scraped of member pages (NOT INDIVIDUAL MEMBER URLS) go to File>Search in List>From File and put the list of URLS. Select a scan depth of 1-2 and in Current and sub-folders only.
This goes through all the member list pages you scraped, then goes through all of the individual member pages and grabs their email, and I've found that Atomic Email Hunter grabs emails far better than Scrapebox. See the below image for example. In the 10 minutes it took me to type this up I scraped 1000 emails from user profiles.
If someone would be kind enough to upload a copy and do a virus scan and what not that would be fantastic, I'm not too sure on the rules regarding that. I think the program can even be found on this forum somewher.
And that's about it!
Go send an email to all those people telling them about your super awesome landing page and to join your email list or whatever, I dunno I'm not a copywriter!
