I used to use below variations :

main kw 80 %

other kws and urls 20 % ...

I am wondering if my anchor text still useful after 3.4 ..

Your suggestions?

I have one site that is in a low competition niche and ranks in the top spot for a lot of keywords. That site's anchor text variation is very low, with about 90% of the backlinks targeting the main keyword for each page. However, the off site SEO done to that site is also very gradual and low in volume.

If you are using heavy blackhat techniques to backlink your site, I would suggest that you keep anchor text diversity very conservative. Maybe 50% main keyword, 25% secondary keywords and 25% naked urls, click here, visit this site type of anchor texts.

I agree with Ramsweb. I've actually started doing about 50% of my anchors generic because it seems that Panda is going in the direction of cracking down on this more and more.

Basically I have been using my good keywords on all the good properties like handmade web 2.0's and pr2+ article directories etc... then use almost all generics on the lesser valuable links.

Use Adwords to figure out what your related terms and diversify your anchor text accordingly. Your main keywords probably make up 40-60% of total traffic, so you should be fine using 40-60% of your anchor as for your main keyword (this is of course based on the assumption that search behaviors mimic linking behaviors.)
