Tags in Wordpress and Meta Keywords Question

I just checked SEOQuake that I have alll my tags on all posts as meta keywords. The problem is I have 100s of it. I know G does not use this factor in ranking anymore but is that safe? How many tags do you have per post? What terms/keywords do you tag? Can you have tags and not set them as meta keywords? Or meta tags= meta keywords. LOL I never understood how or what to tag in posts. I hope you guys can share. Thanks

tag should be keyword you're trying to rank for.

I personally do not use tags. Google is smart enough to know what the page is about without them. As for search engine benefit if they have any at all it'll be so small that it wouldn't even be worth implementing.

So you just leave the tags field for every post blank?
