Confused To Where My Domain is Being Hosted...
Hi all,
So I bought my domain at netfirms and bought hosting because it was only like a dollar for a year. However, I come to find out later that their hosting sucks, but it was not a big deal because I only paid $1 for it.
I then went and bought the hostgator baby package for 6 months and used my existing domain still being hosted at netfirms. Then, after I try to install wordpress through the hostgator control panel, nothing shows up.
So, I guess my domain is still being hosted at netfirms? Even though at hostgator it shows that domain as being my primary website.
Does anyone know how to hopefully get this mess sorted out without having to pay for domain transfers?
Thanks,
P.S. - I'm really a noob at this sort of stuff because before I used to register and host my domains at GoDaddy, so everything was pretty straightforward there. Now I have absolutely no clue on how to work this out.
Thanks again!

I don't know too much about hosting, but it sounds like you need to change the name servers which can easily be changed on the godaddy site. Click on whatever domain it is and see what the name servers are. If you want to use Hostgator it should be something like 6283.hostgator.com (from what I can remember anyway!)

How did you "move" the domain from netfirm to the new place?
Really the proper way is to transfer domain, otherwise you got to either change nameservers or A record.
But eventually you need to move it properly.

I thought I moved it by listing the domain down when I was registering the hostgator hosting. Guess it disnt work lol.
Thanks, I'll try to change the nameserver!

No, you've just added it in but not actually moved from the original host.
If you point nameservers to hostgator it should all work automatically ;(after 24hours or so).
But remember after your years hosting expires with original host you'll need to either renew with them or transfer

Re: Confused To Where My Domain is Being Hosted...
You need to point your DNS to hostgator, right now it's still pointed to netfirms.
Find FAQ at netfirms how to do that, or call/chat with their CS, or just look in their menu for "Transfer DNS to webhost". Look for email from Hostgator, they should have sent you email with info "ns1.domainname.com" "ns2.domainname.com" and IPs of the nameservers.

Re: Confused To Where My Domain is Being Hosted...
You need to update the name servers. You should have received a email from hostgator and they will be listed in it. Take those name servers and go to netfirms and update the nameserver. Wait for a bit before you start freaking out. Dns update will take some time... clearing cache will also help

Re: Confused To Where My Domain is Being Hosted...
Hmmmm... That's weird.
When I try and update the nameservers on netfirms, it says that it is not a valid nameserver.
Anyone know why this is?

Re: Confused To Where My Domain is Being Hosted...
sounds like you are using your own domain name in the nameserver records. you have to point the domain name to the nameserver records provided by hostgator
if you do not know your hostgator hosting nameserver records look in your hostgator account or contact their support and they will provide the nameserver records

Re: Confused To Where My Domain is Being Hosted...
Ok, I finally got the nameservers changed.
Is that the only thing I need to change to transfer the netfirms hosting to the hostgator hosting?
Thanks!
