My site currently appears as mysite.com for my main keyword, should it be www.? Is this important? How would I go about changing it anyway? Probably would look more professional as www.

Doesn't make a blind bit of difference....

i'd say that most users still expect to type in the www. infront of the domain name but so long as one forwards on to the other, then it won't matter.

Which ever one you've chosen - stick with....

So should my backinks be to http://mysite.com or http://www.mysite.com or does google count them the same?

Google treats them both as separate sites so choose one and stick with it for link building as previously mentioned.

Use .htaccess to forward the unused one to the version you have chosen and all will be fine.
