There are so many tools available for this... For monitoring your own keywords you can use Google webmaster tools. This tools gives you a pretty accurate count if you are logged into your account.
As far as Yahoo Siteexplorer is concerned, it gives the backlink count of a section.
Apart from these tools, you can use ‘Keyword Country' for monitoring your and your competitor's backlinks.

i heard that yahoo has stopped updating the backlinks count since 15th september 2011. So yahoo query as well as all tools using that query will no longer be usable. Magesticseo and ahrefs.com do their own crawling and give you good idea of backlinks. Paid accounts let you export each and every backlink. I am a customer of both and find them quite useful. ahrefs.com also have a serp analysis feature which is like semrush.com
