Default I'm an idiot

But learning! Being new to alot of this stuff and having had quick success, I'm only now realizing the importance of hiding my ip address (made a few bucks on a social network profile made without any effort to hide myself).

Okay, so I'm hearing good stuff about ghostsurf but also bad stuff (bugs, crashes etc). If I want to use something on MY system to hide my ip rather than go to a web based solution, would the overall consensus be ghostsurf?

And when I get it up and running how often does it change my ip address? So if I want to create some profiles on a site, is each one created using a different ip address?

Sorry for the basic questions here, just trying to figure it out.

You can't *actually* change your IP (at least not as far as I know).

You can always just go to your local coffee shops, buy a $1 coffee, and use their wireless.

Or go to a library and use their connection.

Or you can use a proxy server (google it). Not all proxy servers anonymize their users though, so you might want to check that first, otherwise you've accomplished nothing.

@Loclhero - I am still learning myself, but I have seen posted here a few times and used myself hidemyass**com. Try it and see if it helps.

Works nicely.

I use Ghost Surf and am using it right now. The only problem which I encounter is that some sites require you to accept cookies so you just select that option while you need it and then get rid of it later.

I have never had GS crash and have never heard of it crashing so I can't comment on that really.

I just can't find anything wrong with GS, especially considering the price.

Okay so I got it today and installed. Seems good but one confusing part (more of "me the idiot"): So now my real ip is hidden. But I still have just ONE ip even if it's ghostsurfs proxy. Right? So what if I need to do something blackhat and then that one gets banned? Am I missing something here?

TOR works just fine for everything I need. I just wish there was an option to make it bounce around to just U.S. and Canadian IP's

The biggest problem I had with ghostsurf is that is was prone to suck up all my system memory, probably from memory leaks in their software. They were never able to fix it so I gave up on them. The proxy stuff worked pretty well as I remember but the crashing got to be too much ...

I just noticed the second part of your post "And when I get it up and running how often does it change my ip address? So if I want to create some profiles on a site, is each one created using a different ip address?"

You don't change your IP you ISP does depending on the type of service you are using. For my part, I run a few dating and social networking sites as well as a site to do software support. I am currently working on exactly the issue you have raised in this posted. If a new member signs up for one of my services and they use a proxy, I am assuming that they are either a spammer or scammer and block them from registering on any of my sites. I have been monitoring the "bad guys" who have registered and almost ALWAYS when a proxy is used, I can bet it to be a spammer. These days its really easy to check out spammers because the internet is now full of information about them and doing a search engine lookup of an IP address will generally tell me whether or not they are listed some where. Three or four years ago, that was not possible... and I struggled for a long time to try to provide a safe environment for my members and now it is a lot easier to check on an IP address. From my perspective, hiding your IP address may return a result you might not expect... fyi.

kindest regards, allaboutdatingsites
