Heres why:

The whole idea of money being made in adsense revolves around the idea of someone clicking on an ad. This is where the money comes from in adsense. But lets take a closer look at it...

When someone clicks an ad on your site - 3 people benifit:

  • You
  • Google
  • The guy/gal who paid to have the traffic diverted to his site with the ad
Here's the problem - there's 3 people in the equation, meaning that 3 different people benifit from the visitor clicking the ad. Therefore you're sharing the benifit with 2 other people. Now you've put in the work to get the visitor to your site, but once you've done this google makes money out of your hard work and so too does the guy who paid for the ad (not always but generally he does).

Therefore the visitor who lands on your site is worth MORE than what you getting out of it becuase 2 outside entities are coming in and able to make a profit on it while at the same time leave you with some.

This has always bothered me about adsense. It's not a good deal for the site owner.

However,

Your not accounting for the time involved to signup for every affiliate program in the world or optimizing your site for performance.

Therefore, while it is in fact, possible to make more by marketing directly to affiliate offers that requires you actually having the time to research and effectively determine which programs are most valuable.

The same situation applies with domain parking...

You can make a few cents a click or build your own parking pages or sell using direct navigation...

I was offered $10 ECPM for one of my domains for direct navigation BUT, I spent 3 weeks building an insanely powerful system scaled my traffic 400% / mo for the last 2 months and that same domain now generates > $50/mo and is growing by the day.

But, keep in mind it took me dozens of hours to register for all the aff programs. 3 weeks in coding time, and a lot of other hard work to make that happen. Now long term I expect it to pay off significantly but, you always need to way many variables before writing adsense or other networks off.

this is true, but sometimes sites are better monetized with adsense then trying to sale a product or get someone to submit their information. It is very dependent on the type of traffic that you get. atleast this has been my experience.
 
This is a very weak point you are making and it is incorrect. Does Google and the advertiser make money off of your hard work? Yes. Do you have an opportunity to make money because of the hard work Google has put into building up Adsense and gathering paid advertisers to advertise on your website? Yes. Has the advertiser put in work to earn money to give them the ability to advertise on your site? Yes.

Everyone in the chain has contributed something. It's not like Google and the advertiser are getting a free ride on your site. You are getting paid for your work. The advertiser is getting traffic for its money, and Google is making money for the work it's done in building the system that matches up you with an advertiser.

Plus Google splits the payout at roughly 70% you, 30% Google, so you are getting the lion share of the money.

I don't see what is bothering you or what you are complaining about. And if you are really this bent out of shape about Adsense, don't put them on your website.
 
unless you're big enough to attract affiliates to your site stick with adsense or CPA offers. Plain and simple. If some guy rolls up one day and offers you $1,000 a month to display his ad on your site, take it....till then don't rock the boat.
 
I do not agree... what about time spent, resources needed, duplication factor etc etc etc... adsense is easy fast etc etc... there are too many factors that just make perfect sense using adsense.

Plus, your equation is BS

Yes, you can make more money by creating your own product, but generally speaking, being an affiliate of someone else's product is much easier.

Yes, you can make more money by using other things on your site besides Adsense. But you can also make serious money with Adsense if you know what you're doing. So what if other people benefit also. Besides, the people paying for the ads are us, IM'ers. So are you saying you don't think using Adsense is a good idea because you don't want us to make money? :)

But to say these things are pointless is just wrong. If you think it's pointless to use Adsense or be an affiliate, why don't you spend some time talking to the people making $xx,xxx.xx or even more daily from them.

I'm open to correction on the matter. I'm just throwing out a discussion which i think brings up an interesting point.

I honestly don't think this is an interesting point at all. It's already been said above, traffic by itself is useless. It has to be monetized somehow. So what if other people benefit from your traffic along with you.

I do agree with you that Adsense and affiliate marketing aren't always the best way to monetize your traffic. But, in other instances it is the best way to make sense. For example, if you make a site about energy efficient refrigerators, Adsense is probably the best way to make money, even though Google and the advertiser will benefit also.
 
ok somebody skipped basic math....

Your equation is really not that great. You've left out all kinds of DIFFERENT variables...

- The advertiser who pays for the click may OR may NOT have an optimized site, he may be throwing away traffic with a high bounce rate, now that just defeats your assumption of him making easy money.

Your site may be getting traffic but it doesn't mean that you can convert that traffic, maybe when they hit your site they are still in clicking/searching mode and they wont buy until they've navigated through 2 more sites.... who knows? could be anything, i'm just saying...

Adsense is a fast way to monetize your traffic without having to convert your traffic into a sale, you SKIP that part!
 
Doc, this is the second thread you've opened about "mathmatical proof blah blah." Show me one successful business venture that hasn't ever had a supplier, middleman, and a storefront(website or B&M). It's the same principal as almost every business in the entire world.

How are either of these threads mathematical proof that CPA doesn't work, or that Adsense is a bad idea.

The entire point of IM, is MARKETING. Someone creates a product, and we push the product (market it) to potential customers. It's an age old practice.

I tell you what, you monetize a site for over a year without any return and then flip it to adsense, start making money then come in here and tell us how much adsense sucks.
 
If you don't use Adsense, how are you going to get high-paying advertisers to advertise on your site? Adsense is by far the best advertising program for publishers as it alllows thousands of advertisers to bid on a keyword, and dynamically displays ads automatically on your pages.

As someone stated above, you need to account also for the time you would have to spend finding someone to advertise on your sites.
 
What about instances where adding adsense makes the average profit per visitor go up?

I have a site that used to do about $50 in adsense each month which wasn't good compared to the traffic it was getting. I switched to affiliate products and started getting around $250 in sales which was much better. So far the theory of using adsense to make less is sound.

BUT...

I added a block of adsense at the bottom of the pages below the other affiliate offers and started getting around $100 a month from that. The clicks were about $2 each. Of course I get a 0.5% click through but it somehow does well at that location on the page.

It doesn't have to be about one or the other. It is about what makes you the most money for the traffic you generate.
 
The real mathematical proof that Adsense is a waste of time:

Half-assed IM efforts + Adsense ads poorly placed on a poorly optimized site = Adsense monthly earnings $0.00
