After months of work, I got nothing much to show for it. I've run out of money and no earnings yet.

Would you say I picked a wrong battle?

You're not really saying much about what you did, so it would be hard to give you any kind of advice. Did you set up a really basic crappy website and wait for the money to pile in? Where you offer products, advice, both? Did you do any link building, SEO, anything to build your site? You say you ran out of money, was that spent on links, website building, or bong hits and munchies?

I'm not in it personally, but I understand that fitness can be a little harder of a category to get into, and that's because if you can get in people will spend a lot of money on it.

So, simply asking about the keywords themselves without any background simply doesn't help us to help you.

And just some advice, it the future if you think you've found some good keywords you may want to keep them to yourself and talk about them in general rather than flash them to the entire world.

Build muscle is a super competitive niche with a lot of quality sites in the serps already and a ton of good free info out there. I would have picked a less competitive niche personally.

This sums it up.

Target some small niches, the building muscle niche is overpopulated not only on the internet but on TV and in magazines as well.

not a crappy website.
my offer is -> vince del monte
my articles are high quality, expensive, 1000 words +
i bought tools
outsourced too
most money spent on tools, outsourcing, articles

i have no problem giving away my keywords. they didn't make me money. they made me BROKE!

sigh, so how do you pick a good market to target? i screwd up here.

the thing is, i might fight keywords that are 'technically' good to target according to tools (market samurai) but it might actually be bad to target. just like my keywords above.

so how do i know if a niche is worth targeting?

I would suggest that you're targeting keywords that have nothing to do with a purchase. "How do I...." doesn't mean they have a credit card ready, it just means they're looking to figure stuff out. When you post "How do I fix my keyword research" on BHW, do you do so with your credit card out? No way, you're just looking for info.

Think about what it is that people are really asking when they type stuff into Google. Unless you have an amazing webpage, the chances of you being able to grab the consumer by the wallet and drag them from information-search into a purchase is slim.

picking a niche is covered ad nauseum on BHW. i'm not familiar with market samurai, but in traffic travis you can easily gauge what's ranking on the first page for a term. you want to look at the PR rank of those pages, the number of backlinks to the page in the SERP, as well as the age of the domain as some of the primary factors. if there are no PR4+, and the sites dont have good on-site SEO and < 1000 back links it might be a good start.

make sure before you rank your site that there's actually money in it. i'd say you want 5,000+ searches a month, but it all depends on the niche and how profitable it is. you can get away with less visitors if there's a lot of advertisers for it, etc.

Those are all long tail keywords. How long have you been doing SEO on them, I think you should be able to rank or get some results if you had done the SEO or marketing part properly

I'm not an expert but from what i understand you should do this:

If your goal is to use PPC or CPA, your keywords are fine.

If your goal is to promote products, you should target buyer keywords. By buyer keywords i mean, keywords that may lead to the assumption that the person searching for them is interested in buying something. Some examples of these keywords are:

Buy <main keywords> , cheap <main keywords> , <main keywords> review , <main keywords> scam, specific brand names, etc.

You choose the right niche and keyword. There is probably something wrong with your seo method, perhaps too little backlinks ? How's your link building ?

You picked the wrong battle. Too much competition. Period.

Here is my take on keyword research.

1. Get into right mindset.

Remember,
THERE ARE UNLIMITED NUMBER OF HIGH TRAFFIC
LOW COMPETITION KEYWORDS THAT CONVERT
If you have problems with that, read "Thing and grow rich" and
"Science of getting rich". Especially pay attention to "abundance
mentality" versus "scarcity mentality". Join some new age group,
start meditation program, get in touch with you feelings, etc so
you know Universe loves you and stuff like that :)

The key is to drill into your head that your keywords are out there
waiting for you. You can find these keywords in ANY marker
REGARDLESS of how competitive it is.

Nowadays I'd spend ten times more doing keyword research than
anything else.

2. One keyword per website

Fuck the authority sites. Fuck tons of long tail keywords. If you are
to succeed in fast and efficient manner you need to FOCUS. It is
unbelievably effective to blast one single keywords. Take three or
four of them and you time to page one will quadruple. I've learned
it the hard way. You don't have to.

3. Domain = Keyword + {.com|.org|.net}

If you can't get a keyword rich domain, find another keyword.
Remember, there are UNLIMITED number of them. Many "experts"
say get suffix domain name like keyword+{site|online|blog|etc}.
I say, fuck them. Let others work hard for their money. Less
competition for you.

4. Pick GOOD keyword

What is good keyword?

a. It passes a gut test.

Use your own judgement. "Download Wii FIT free"? Probably not.
"Buy provillus"? Probably yes. Read other comments about targeting
buyer keywords and product related keywords. I don't like "howto"
keywords as well but you can still convert them with a good story.

b. 1500+ EXACT searches per month

Yes, exact. Forget about broad here. If it is huge on broad but
low on exact this means you will fail to get traffic. I learned it
the hard way so you don't have to.

Ideally you want to have 2500+ EXACT searches per month.

AVOID big traffic keywords. Like 1000 searches per day. Even with
low SEOC. You can still go for it but you'll most likely find that
competition on page one is crazy.

c. Healthy amount of competition

He is what it means. SEOC MUST be less than 50,000. Ideally
less than 25,000. Perfect SEOC is 10,000 or less. Remember,
there are UNLIMITED number of keywords like this.

I go for SEOC up to 100,000 but it means LONGER BATTLE.
Remember, there are UNLIMITED number of keywords that
mean high traffic little competition criteria.

Also check the amount of inurl:"keyword" intitile:"keyword"
pages. This is your real competition. Anything less than 1000
means piece of cake. My upper limit for it is 30,000 (for
100,000 SEOC).

5. Check page one for your keyword

I use Market Samurai to assess the competition. I avoid
competition like huge authority sites (Wikipedia,
about.com, etc) or other affiliates who have thousands
of backlinks for page and PR2+.

I also pay attention to on page optimisation. You'll be
surprised how many affiliate screw this part up.

The answer to your question: you have too much competition.
Regardless of how good you're at blasting backlinks, pick the
battle you can win. Let others work hard for their commissions.

Cheers.

PS. Next battle for you will be conversions :) One single
recommendation here - NLP (especially Milton model and
metaphors).

WOW. Finding that kind of keyword is hard. :) I already spent half my day looking.

By the way, when you buy domain for that keyword, how can you blast that domain considering its new. Shouldn't you wait a couple of years or not blast at all?

Could you please expand on the above quote^^ for me?.

Excellent post and advice there Cash202.

3. Domain = Keyword + {.com|.org|.net}

If you can't get a keyword rich domain, find another keyword.

I'll have to disagree with you on that one, but I see where you are coming from.

To the OP, you might try finding some product name keywords instead. Just keep at it, because this is an art form!

I actually blasted brand new just indexed .me domain and it worked
to a certain extent.

I have several laser targeted domains that got on page one by
their own without blasting in around three months.

I do crazy blasts on domains that are at least three months old.

I have this gut feeling about magic three months period that you
need to wait before Google really starts to trust your new site and
give it ranking.

If you have two year old domain, by all means go crazy with blasts.

Dont let high PR scare you. PR is primarily used by google to determine the value of a link from that page, not the value of the page itself. I have a lot of kw rich domains that out ranked high PR pages (3-6) in a couple weeks (literally 2 weeks).

Spend the time finding the right keywords. It is not uncommon for me to spend 2 days and weed through a 1000+ keywords to find 20-30 that I want to tackle. But that 2 days spent will save me months of hard work. Dont be lazy, you gotta power through it.

I second cash202, get a domain that is keyword.com|.net|.org or dont waste your time, at least until you get the hang of how things go. You will be surprised how easy it is to rank a KW.com|.net|.org domain.

Good Luck

NLP = Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Milton model and metaphors are parts of NLP.
