Scraping map data

Hey there,

building a location DB and need something to start with - what would you suggest would be the best way to get some basic data - POIs, city centres etc.? I downloaded a 1GB OSM file but it would take me years to filter out the required data.

I am using Google Maps API. Is there a way to scrape Google's data? I know the Google Maps Scraper but that one doesn't scrape coordinates unfortunately.
