RSS feeds are basically automatic updates to subscribers.You submit to RSS feeds ,people can subscribe etc,when you update the site the updated content is feed va RSS to various places within 30mins.They would have to manually visit your site to know about the updated info on your site.Consider it a form of pinging because,essentially that what it is.
