traffic question

hi

this is a question to guys that have high traffic websites/blogs. 10,000+ a day

I want to create a website that that will be blog style and will have mainly photos in its posts. Not large size but decent.

I'll be driving traffic initaly with bought traffic from right here on bhw! i want to try and send 10,000 a day to the site.

So my question is... what kinda server will i need and roughly how much bandwidth will this burn up??
I currently have a blue host ($80 a year deal) shared hosting package sitting there not doing anything, but i guess this wont be enough.
Will i need a dedicated server?

I am clueless when it comes to hosting.

Bandwidth is going to depend on how many pics per page * picture size * page views so I can't really say. I imagine you might run into cpu usage / mysql query problems on a shared host (they will deactivate your site if it uses so much % cpu for so long, read the TOS of your host to find out more). If you are going to try it (assuming you are on WP since you said blog site) look into w3 total cache and google about "how to withstand the slashdot effect wordpress" and see what you can find out. w3 cache will reduce the mysql calls by creating static html pages to be served and will cache most of the content of a WP site. This in turn will severely reduce the amount of CPU you are eating up.

Yes it will be a wordpress blog. I have no idea about w3 so i'll have to google that.

If the pics are not clickable i.e. you cant open them up in another page. Then this will saze on some bandwidth/cpu right?

It will prevent the visitor from forcing another page load so I suppose that would be correct. The best CPU saver is going to be a caching system though, you can find the plugin I mentioned (w3 total cache) on the wordpress.org website under extensions, or in your wordpress backend by using the search option under plugins -> add new plugin

10K a day is a lot for a wordpress site, wordpress is quite a heavy CMS and needs a lot of tweaking to perform under load. A caching plugin is the first step. W3 total cache is a good all in solution but there are faster setups out there.

Bandwidth won't be saved by just showing big pics because you are serving every large pic unnecessarily. If you serve thumbnails, only a small proportion of the big pics will get looked at.

CPU will be saved by showing big pics only because you'll be serving up less page views, therefore less load on the CPU.

10,000+ visitors a day and using shared hosting? you will take too much resources, and the hosting company will suspend your account...

Yeah thank i'll stick to a dedicated server.
