I had over 9,000 backlinks for many months and I just checked on site explorer and it says I have 5,000 only. Also Google dropped my pagerank from 3 to 1 recently. Is this because I revamped my website last year and there were lots of broken links?

Most likely the links got deleted or replaced. If you had many blog comment links then you were probably on some big recent commentators lists, then got replaced by others.

use Google webmaster tools to find any 404 errors then put in 301 redirects to fix those errors

This can depend an severall factors. First of all check you own site. Are you giving google what they want? Then check the availability of you backlinks.. Are there still there? Are they only "cheap" backlinks or are they clean ones? Are you continiously building backlinks?

Unfortunately I'd recommend that you keep building links. Right now you are experiencing something typical. Links will fall off because of where the pages are on the internet, for example it wasn't on a page thats indexed anymore. Or they were removed, or sites were deleted.

This is completely normal.
