Backlinking- too much too soon necessarily a bad thing??

Hey guys!
I have a few sites with 2 backlinks. Competition has over 3,000. How long should I build to reach the tipping point or can I go out and buy 3000 backlinks today?

I have read that if it looks like a fake push google will actually push your rankings down instead of up.
Where is the line that should not be crossed?

Notice that even if your competitor has 3000 backlinks, you may not be able to beat it with 4000 or even more links. You must also analyze the links of your competitor. It 1000 backlinks from the 3000 are pr 5-6 and do follow, it would take you tears and cry to beat him.

About your specific question, do not add over 700 backlinks a day. Put the high pr ones and also vary the type of links. Patience is a vertue in Seo.

Is there a tool to measure which sites have which PR rankings? I know edu domains are all great, but in regards to twitter postings, blog rolling, and individual sites, where can I find each's pr ranking? That way I can focus on the PR6-8! and leave the pr3 out to save time posting.

in the short term yes, but in the long term, you'll end up on top. i wouldn't worry about it too much. you should build links as fast as you can IMHO.

also, like what was said above, the number of backlinks pointing to a page is not the only thing you have to consider when determining how hard it will be to rank. You also have to look at how many total backlinks he has pointing to his overall site, how well optimized his on-page seo is for the keyword, what percentage of his backlinks have the keyword as anchor text, and what the PR of the pages and domains are that his links are on. if his on-page seo sucks and none of his links use the keyword as anchor text, you may only need a hundred high-quality links to outrank him. if his on-page seo is solid, his links all use the keyword as anchor text, and all of his links are on high PR pages or domains, you will likely need way more than a few thousand
