I keep seeing the term, but how do you know if you are, and what exactly does it mean?

For me it means: You are ranking for a term/keyword, and then with no sudden reason, you lose all ranking for the term.

Sandbox means your website is penalized for the time being for building links too fast or for targeting a very competitive niche with tons of links.

Sandbox means you will not find your site on google listings.

google penalized your site for along time, but you can ask google reconsideration from webmaster tools to get your site appear again on google.

You would only ask for a reconsideration if your website is DEINDEXED.

i don't think so... deindexed site is the matter of time, you shouldn't ask for reconsideration if your site deindexed by google.

Sandboxed means google deindexed your site too...

No really... deindex = permanent ... sandbox = temporary... why would you ask Google to reconsider your website if it is only temporarily gone?

Maybe I am confused? I doubt it D:

The Google sandbox is a google's way to help stop people spamming their search engine. By taking sites out the main index and google placing them in the sandbox, google is taking a "time out" on the site to let it settle in the index. Increasing quality backlinks and good SEO practices can move the site out of the sandbox quicker.

The Sandbox (the Google penalty) is a name given to an observation about the way Google ranks web pages in its index. According to the sandbox effect, Google temporarily reduces the page rank of new domains, placing them into what is referred to as its "sandbox", in an effort to counter the ways that search engine optimizers attempt to manipulate Google's page ranking by creating lots of inbound links to a new web site from other web sites that they own.
