Lightbulb Is there really so much money in Content writing ? Advice Needed !

    Hello Everyone,
For far too long, too many people have told me that 'as long as you can write well you can mint money' and for better or worse i have started believing that now. I am thinking of starting a BST here but before i put down that $127 (which is a small fortune for me now) I'd like to get some opinions.

Assuming that i write fantastic, grammatically perfect, easily readable content in an acceptably quick time-frame, Would i be able to really make some serious money ($100 a day) ? I have been an online writer for about 8 years now and just recently lost the 2 gigs that paid me decently. Which leaves me with only about a gazillion hours of free time everyday.

I have gone through a lot of samples of what people consider as good writing here and i am confident that i can top that easily.

So kind folks, fill this thread with your advice. I have a feeling that finally i have found an idea that could work for me, just need the courage to go ahead with it

    Thank you everyone !!

Let me tell you that my biggest problem is finding a QUALITY content writer. It is hard for me to find someone that is capable of writing at a university/college level when needed, and able to product mediocre stuff for the less important needs.

There will always be people who realize the time is more valuable then their money and their in IM. I'm looking for content as we speak so if you could provide consistent quality I'd be willing to give it a try.

Everybody is looking for high quality content for their sites but unfortunately not everyone will be willing to pay what you may expect, regardless of your talent. I suggest you take a look in the marketplace here and see what articles are going for. That may give you a better idea of what to expect with selling content.

100 dollars a day writing 4 articles at 25 bucks a pop would not be bad. But you may end up having to bang out 20 articles a day at 5 bucks a piece. That can burn you out real fast. I am not trying to discourage you... just giving you a reality check and some food for thought before you get into this.

People are willing to pay good money for high quality content but proving yourself and getting such clients may take some time. Just do your due diligence before shelling out that money for a BST.

Good luck Bro.... and love your avatar.

I must admit I'm stunned lol. I never knew guys from BHW would pay money for content writing. I'm lurking the forums for quite some time now, trying to grasp some stuff to kick start my ideas, however, if you guys really need content writer, I might qualify. For writing samples and all the good stuff, do poke me.

And no, I didn't just create an account to advertise my skills, I've just had nothing useful to share ever, since I'm new to this.

    Peace!

You put my thoughts better than i could've. I see people charging less than 1$ for 100 words and it depresses me because i put a lot of thought, personal style and research in my articles. And i used to think that the 35 a pop i got at my last job was less. I miss the good old days where one 4-500 article would pay u $65.

Are there people who would pay say $10-$15 for a well written article. I am talking an article with a personality. Maybe there are people who are not satisfied with just correct grammar & spelling. That's a given right ? for some reason that seems to be th emost popular requirement over here.

I thank you for your comment bro and Kiss Army forever

As someone who offers this service in the BST section, I can confirm that it's a bit harder than it seems. Jdog is right. If you were writing a few good articles each day and getting paid a decent amount for doing it, it would be fine. However, in order to compete, you have to offer them for around $5 per article. Writing 20 articles per day is mind numbing, especially when most of them are about penis pills and diet products.

As I've frequently suggested, it's better to think of writing or freelancing as a dependable, never ending source of quick cash or working capital for your IM business, instead of a $100/day main conduit of online earnings. Think more on the lines of $25-30 a day from 5-6 articles tops, as that pace is sustainable, without burning you out. Use that 'trickle' cash to pay stray IM bills as you build your real income centers from building monetized sites, offline SEO consulting, reselling or wholesaling, and so on.

If you really want more from writing, check the thread on high-paying writing sites, qualify for a few of them, and concentrate on writing several high quality articles a day for $15 on up each. Or, if you are clever, you can plan to 'stack' the writing so as to bank 2-3 ways from the same content (e.g., draft an ebook or ecourse in article-sized chunks, sell the chunks as articles, re-write the articles for your own site, convert the text into audio or video files to sell as a WSO, etc.).

25 dollars per day is actually a lot from where I come from. If this is a feasible amount per day I won't mind writing about "penis pills" all day. LOL. Actually one of the vets suggested I do content writing because of one of my posts that he saw. Hope this pans out for me. Based on one of the above posters comments, I think I'll let content writing be my seed money for future projects. Am willing to start out slow, hopefully in a few weeks time I'll be able to afford my own domain and host. Then while I'm writing content I'll also be doing some IM. Very nice posts on this thread. The noobs who can write should see this. It will help them start out.

I've been able to regularly get $7-10 for 500 word articles. The hard part is finding clients who don't want spammy SEO writing with a million criteria. Textbroker and other services like it make it difficult to make a living when you're constantly being boxed in by the buyer's requirements (which often times barely make sense). Forums are definitely the place to get started; avoid Fiverr as you barely get any money and it takes 14 days to get paid.

You can see a lot on the Internet offering content writing services. The problem is, you can rarely find those that can deliver top quality content. If you believe you have the skills, you can definitely earn. Many people are looking for quality content writers. If you can deliver well, you will continually have clients ordering articles from you.

Well Quantum my friend thank you for your encouraging words. However i must say its a huge struggle to find clients and till now i've been doing shitty 2$ articles on very weird topics for fussy clients on iwriter hoping to reach an elite status.

To think that somewhere in the world there are people who are dying to get some good quality content and i don't know who they are just breaks my heart :P

I charge around $35.00 an article. I try to sell packages of 30 articles. I get my own clients by sending an email to their webmaster or the person in charge of the website.

Internet marketers are not the best clients to write for. They are cheap and most don't make that much money. Try to write to larger websites/companies. They are happy to pay $35.00 -$50.00 per article. They think that is quite reasonable.

Need an idea for what niche to write to? Try something in golf for starters. Go to Google and type in, " golf articles contact us." Start opening up each website. Send them a short, friendly email asking if they would like to buy some quality articles to use for their website? You will get lots of responses. (This is not spam. You are merely asking a question.)

You can beat out competition by offering something extra, for example: offer SEO keyword research and keyword density of 1-2%. Offer to submit the articles to directories and/or social networks. I don't do the latter, but would if I had to.

You need to have a website, a resume' (so they know a little something about you) and keep everything as professional as possible.

Never, ever write for $5.00 and article. $10.00 is not enough to charge. Go for it!
    Happy writing---

While you are earing some income filling small article orders, set yourself up a blog on a topic you like best and throw adsense on it. Write one article for it everyday while you are writing other articles and in the long run you'll be banking hard. as long as u pick a good paying niche. Long term money maker for someone who can write quality content. One person on here talked about consulting a lady who owns a blog on vacations to new york and does over 30k a month in adsense. Of course the blog has been around for a long long time and she adds quality content because she lives in new York and knows what to tell travelers to visit while vacationing. just an idea.

The above advice would be good I would say...you should work for your client at the same time you can develop your blog, if your blog started giving you money you can increase it at larger level.

I can also say that $1.5/100 words is attainable if you write well, as that is what I am getting right now. I have not had too difficult a time finding multiple clients which pay that, generally on a 500 word per article basis. I am just looking for more money. I have an employee and all we do is write, write, write, write, write. I figure that we should be doing at least $5000 per month with the talent that we have between us. The good thing is that we are not writing SEO, about penis pills, or any other kind of sales pieces. But still, I think as a team we could take on 95% of the people that are writing on the net for a living, and we would be right in there at the top.

I say just stay positive. Keep honing your skills. That is what we are doing until I find us that opportunity that will take us to the next level of earnings.

Yes there is, but your grammar and style have to be top-notch. ESL writers are a dime a dozen. (Dime a dozen = cliche term, best to avoid when writing for clients:P)

Keep in mind that professional writers earn .10 per word and more. In some cases, much more. There are sites where you can earn that, but again, you have to be a great writer.

Additionally, Google's recent Penguin update essentially mandates that webmasters stop spinning content. This may well usher in a golden age of sorts for content writers.

    *****

On another note, I've found that many webmasters who complain of not being able to find someone to write high quality content for them are not offering enough in compensation, especially given the Penguin update mentioned above. Webmasters, it is important to understand that native-English writiers can go to Textbroker, iWriter and Textmaster and earn $20-$100 a day without the hassle associated with private clients.

In short, we don't need you if you're paying 1-1.5 cents per word. Those who can pass muster at Constant-Content will never even need to think of you.

A semi-professional writer may well work at the $5/500 level provided that they can write and edit the article quickly. This usually occurs when the client's subject matter overlaps with the writer's knowledge, resulting in a minimum of research.

    *****

Tips for OP: (which aren't based on your post above. I didn't critically analyze it)

    1. Avoid fluff at all costs. Adding fluff to increase word-count is the worst thing you can do for your career. You'll quickly earn a bad reputation, and/or you'll have to deal with laborious rewrite requests.

    2. Keep thesaurus.com open while you write...and use it.

    3. Get an online grammar checker. It will only ever be a crutch but it will catch errors that slip by when you're fatigued. I recommend correctenglish.com and grammarly.com, in that order. Neither is cheap. Consider an online grammar checker an investment in your career.

    4. Ask new clients to pay at least half up front. Should be self-explanatory, I hope. If they're not willing to deal, move on. Once you've worked with them a few times, drop this requirement. It's just good customer service.

    5. Don't accept orders with tight turnaround times unless you are absolutely sure that you can meet the deadline. Repeat business is the name of the game and being late is a good way to anger a client. IMers are busy folks, and they need their content now, now now.

    6. Don't rely on Textbroker, iWriter etc. Yes, you can make a decent daily sum there but they will hold you back in the long-run. I'd say $20 a day is the max you should try to suck out of them. They're content mills, and they don't respect writers. Working in that environment will dampen your spirits over time. Besides, loyal private clients are where you'll make the balance of your earnings.

    7. If you're a native-English writer and have impeccable grammar skills, you should join Constant-Content.com. You get to name your own price and if you write in popular niches and/or get private clients you can make great money.

    8. Don't work with anyone who disrespects you or your craft in any way. Period. Complete the work and then terminate the relationship. It's just not worth it.

    9. Don't take on more work than you can handle in a 24 hour period. It's easy to do.

    10. If you can get work published on large sites or Constant-Content, you're probably a good enough writer to take a swing at publishing on the Kindle platform. Most of what's up there is junk, so you would have a chance to stand out. If you have a great story to tell or an insight into business, finance, etc, you might even write up a proposal to the Kindle Singles division of the platform, which offers a great deal more exposure and profit.

    11. Know thyself. Write what you know and don't stray too far from your comfort zone if your goal is to make money consistently. If you take on a bunch of jobs that require extensive research you may find yourself working for 3rd world wages when all is said and done. That's not to say you shouldn't branch out, but you shouldn't make it your focus, either.

You can make decent or good money writing. You just have to find someone who is willing to pay you what you are worth. This is often a challenge!

People use different resources at different points in their careers.

Internet marketing clients are on about the same level as content mills when all is said and done. They don't want to pay more than 2 cents per word.

There is really damn good money at content writing. If you doubt me then just check out pal4articles tariff page which quite big lump sum to earn ranging around $2300 usd for only a single client per month. Pal4articles though an SEO and web design company with aligned service of content writing; still make big deals on the basis of numbers of words.

Be careful of not to get a burn out from writing more articles than you can handle per day. I suggest you think of a daily limit. I don't like to write 20 articles today, and I will not write for the next 5 days. For me, I can easily get tired of writing. This writing gig requires discipline. Good luck with your project.

There is an expression that most will know: "pay peanuts, get monkeys" and this hold true with writing. If you want quality by genuine native English speakers that is unique, not spammy, and Google proof then it comes at a cost. So to give my 2 cents of advice to "SomeDevil" and other writers, choose your clients carefully, a client who is searching on Fiverr only wants to spend $5 and is probably looking for quick, bulk, semi-readable content. Approach corporate clients who are not looking for another payday / casino / etc review, plus you will actually get to write on some interesting new topics.

It depends on whether they give you the topics to write about, or if you're doing a longer term project for a company producing regular content, if the latter then my advice is don't do it.

My wife has been writing high quality articles for website publication for almost 2 years for a HUGE company, they would only pay GBP15 per article, and wanted one per day within their niche.

If it were possible to find 7 stories to write about on Monday morning you could produce at least 6 on Monday and finish the them all by Tuesday lunch.

Problem is it's just not that simple, it takes ages to find good enough stories, then to get enough info you end up needing to ring people up & interview them or ask questions, then write them up and you'll find that unless they're paying you closer to $70 per article it just isn't viable.

On top of that huge companies have a habit of not paying, like the feckers who the wifes been working for who haven't paid for the last 6 months worth of work - I just found out and have gone bananas.

So leave it well alone unless they give you the topics to write about, and don't undersell yourself, make sure you charge a sensible price - but then they won't want to use you because they want champagne at lemonade prices.

This is my newbie tip: if your content is so good, why not make your own website? Try both (selling articles and making a website), see what's most profitable for you, then make a choice. Good luck!

I've actually made a some pretty decent money from content writing. I recently found a website that has a nice platform where you can also resell your content and compete in bids.
Go to Paperbid, try getting positive feedback and you might make some decent $$

In content writing, you make money from building up a clientele. You want to put yourself in a position where you are that customer's ONLY writer. It is definitely possible to make some serious money this way. However, you have to be a very strong writer. Also, offering your services at premium prices is a GOOD, because it weeds out customers that aren't serious enough to pay for high quality content.

Cool Re: Is there really so much money in Content writing ? Advice Needed !

Hey, Listen carefully. In writing articles, I am making money every month on autopilot. Content is money, I think you know that one. But the question is why you don't want to write and monetize in your own blog? If your content is informative and unique, you will make money automatically bro using blogs. Instead of writing for another site, write it in your own blog, apply in Adsense or any other alternative web site...

I think there are few routes you can take on, when we are talking about writing for a living. They are covered by the people who posted before me I think. But let`s stop talk about actual methods and talk about results.

The truth is - writing for money is basically selling X hours a day for X amount of money per day. Have in mind there are two types of people on this planet - people who are slling their time and people who are selling their ideas. The first are those who work 9-5. The second ones are the people who hire those who work 9-5. The conclusion is this - if you can be from those who sells their ideas, that`s nice. There is a way in which you can do it even in IM and even in articles writing. However, if you are from the first ones, the people who are selling their time - then at least make sure you are selling your time for a good money.

There are things that can hold you back if you don't have Master Plan. Let's say you start working for content mills - yes, you will make money, eventually, but at some point you will be at the place where the only way in which you can earn more money per day would be to increase your working hours. I mean - the earnings from such places have limits. And can be irregular sometimes. But at least you are not wasting time dealing with searching for clients - this saves you time which you can spend typing some more articles and doing extra money. So there are good sides and... not that awesome sides. But let's get to the Master Plan - if you don't have such, you better make one. And when you make it, make sure it's reasonable and possible to be archieved. I mean it's fine if your master plan is to make 200$ per day. But in the meantime you must have some food on the table, etc. So you must take steps to earn those money. It's like that - the first day you want to archieve some small sum. Let's say 10$. At the end of the week you would like to make 20-50$ per day. And so on. Have a plan how to cover your current expenses. And have a plan how to increase your current earnings in the future.

Decide for yourself if you can spend all your time to go after well-paying clients and if you can afford to wait till you find them. Or if you need to spend half your time( or more) writing articles for content mills, or some not so well paying clients in the meantime, to cover your needs and the needs of your family, if you have such.

That`s the advice I can give you.

    Best regards,
    Axeny

Absolutely agreed. The content mills may have been great several years ago but saturation and google updates have put a damper on those sites potential. When I joined texbroker the assignments available looked like they were picked over by vultures. The only available assignments had confusing instructions, or would take a ridiculous amount of time to complete for only a few dollars. One that comes to mind is a request for a summary of a nearly hour video of an episode of fallen televangelist JIM BAKER! Blech! I'd rather pay THEM not to have to watch! Plus, all my writing would be subject to the style guide and punctuation Nazis. No thanks again....
Better to write what you like for your own website/blog, then try to monetize it at some point, IMHO.
