Default How to get more Money out of my writing?

    Hi Everyone!

I've been a writer for past 4 years or so and I've seen some really stupid rates for articles. I mean rates that aren't even worth a single minute you spend writing.

So my question is, how to get more money out of writing?

I already know the suggestion "develop good relations with the client etc etc" but still, there's got to be people (clients) out there who think that what they require, deserves more than a few pennies. I want to know how to reach them?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

If the min wordcount on an article is 500, which takes anywhere between 30mins-2 hours. The minimum rate per 100 word shouldn't be less than $3.

No offence, but the quality of your writing isn't worth $15 an article. You can hire some pretty good writers for that much. I think you're more likely to get ~$6 an article from what I have seen.

or maybe you've only seen underselling writers so far? You know the kinda ones who are desperate for work cuz of their needs? I know cuz I've been in that position.......A Lot!

and I want to change that and start looking for peeps who aren't "cut-throat-etcs" with the help of this thread.

    Had to start somewhere...right?

If you are a writer expecting $3 per 100 words you should at least punctuate your responses correctly...

If your work is good enough, people will pay for it. As I said, and I don't mean to be rude, but your work isn't worth $3/100 words.

I don't know why anyone would pay you $15 an article when you could get a similar quality for $5-6 elsewhere, unless you got lucky and found someone who didnt know what they were doing and would happily overpay.

If you want to work as a writer I would recommend you think twice before you say something like that, unless you think that grammar is irrelavent for writers.

Strongrly agree with you bro! But that's exactly the problem I'm trying to overcome. Call it competition or whatever, but the rates are crappy just because someone is always willing to work on unbelievably low rates (regardless of their geographical location) and the clients don't even bother to think twice about paying good rates.

btw, I'm currently getting $2.5ish/100 words.

A good writer can be seen by the way he converse or response to other people, as a writer you should always be cautious on whatever that is your gonna response be it grammar or punctuation, because whether we like it or not, successful people are so meticulous. They always want the best for their money.

I think you mean know. Like meathead I don't intend on insulting you but it's very clear your writing ability does not justify anything above $1/100words. By the way all article writers SHOULD be grammar nazi's!

If you start a thread in hopes of getting high rate offers for your writing, then you must expect that people are going to be super critical of your writing. Also you yourself need to be super critical of your writing/posting (at least in a thread where you are trying to advertise/promote your professional writing abilities).

Developing good relationships is a great idea for your money to increase. You also need to have some great content and be willing to go the extra mile. I have found that I sometimes have to accept jobs that were lower than what I wanted but as I worked with the clients, my pay increased quite a bit because they liked what they saw.

write for yourself...build blogs and website with decent content then rank them...

another suggestion: learn to write faster but still high quality...write several articles all together like multitasking...it sounds crazy but I heard some people can actually do it...

"Your", not "you're" on both occasions in this sentence.

Agree with the comments here - if you're a quality writer then you should be aware of grammar/spelling at all times, not just when writing articles. If someone posts a sales thread offering their writing services, the first thing I'll do is look at their previous posts.

As for earning more - Constant Content is a great place but they're real grammar nazis, so if your writing style here is anything to go by then expect a lot of rejections.

Some BHW members will pay decent amounts for quality work so keep an eye on the Hire a Freelancer section as well. Being available at all times helps - most of the work offered has pretty tight deadlines.

I understand how you feel, especially when some of our fellow forum members checked the way you compose your responses to their posts in this thread. That's the way it is, Tolzoh. You and I are both making a living out of writing. So it only goes without saying that we should exercise English 101 all the time and wherever we post.

Tolzoh has a point - bad writers (99% of the members of this forum) don't appreciate good writing. There are many writers who are worth a lot more than $3/100 words, including myself. However, that doesn't mean some schmuck who doesn't even use "your" and you're" in the proper place is worth paying extra for.

The online economy for article writers is garbage. If you want to make money with writing online, get into copywriting or Kindle ebooks. Otherwise, enjoy getting paid what you're worth.

    Can't help but laugh.

    $3 for 100 words? You're getting $2.5 for 100?

    Wow, I'm hella underpaid then!

Seriously speaking though, the way you've been replying to people here gives everyone an idea what kind of "writer" you are. Again, no offense, but every post you've made in this thread had grammar or punctuation issues. GLARING ONES BTW, like You're when it should be YOUR. That's very basic, and its one of the common mistakes in the book.

Anyway, good luck. I don't want to express my entire thoughts 'cause things may go bad.

As I went through your OP, I wanted to offer you quite a few handy tips for making a living out of content writing, but I changed my mind after going through your other posts. You've been trying to blatantly promote your service on this thread, but I think Steelballs already noticed it and after carefully analyzing your posts, I also realized that you're trying to upsell/promote your service.

I don't want to argue whether you should get paid $3 per 100 words or not because I have come across some clients who out of their sheer ignorance about the industry or high quality expectations do pay even $4 per 100 words, so if you're lucky, then you may come across one of these clients. If you're interested to start a service on this forum or get good clients, then I would suggest you to start working on the quality of your posts because they act as a mirror for your quality.

If you tend to write grammatically flawed sentences in your posts, then your prospective clients would perceive that you're not grammatically sound. People go by face value, so you need to work on this aspect. Moreover, I would suggest you to hire writers in order increase your earnings. Have a blessed day ahead.

Oh my.. I'm feeling a bit embarrassed for you right now.

I agree with the people on this thread. The way a person converses tells a lot about his writing style and skill level. When I used to hire from oDesk, I never asked for sample articles. I would simply write back and forth with a prospect for a bit. That was enough for me to determine their writing capability.

I'm not a writer nor do I claim to be. But, I do know basic grammar from high school.

Not paying $3 per 100 words is not being cheap. Not when I can hire a reputable member on this forum to do it for half the price and twice the quality. It would be a bit dumb for me to pay more for lesser quality work... just saying. I would gladly pay $3 per 100 words if the quality was on par with the competition (and if the TAT works for me).

To answer your question about how to get more money from your writing? Easy. Don't sell it and use it for yourself. The reason people pay for an article to be written is because they know they can make more than what they're paying for it. Of course, this only applies if you have a solid plan for what to do with it.

Everyone likes to place a worth on their own creative works, and in a consequence will usually price themselves out of the market.

From a personal perspective I look at how much I need to earn per hour minimum to make ends meet, and then see how many articles I can write in an hour writing about random topics of 500 words or more. I will then price my articles per 500 words to almost match the minimal hourly rate I am willing to work at for writing articles.

If I find I can write articles about a particular subject quicker than others in any given hour, then I will tend to specialize in writing these articles so I can get a better hourly rate. e.g 3 gaming articles at $6 per 500 in an hour, as opposed to 2 scientific articles at $6 per 500 in an hour.

You will of cause have to take into account the fact you may need to research on subjects you are not familiar with, and that is another reason I like to specialize in topics I am familiar with to help streamline and quicken my article writing activities.

My recommendation is to sell your service in online marketplaces like Odesk, Elance, Freelancer etc. You will get quality employer there and you will get proper payment for your writings.

Maybe you can raise your writing service rate if you are able to deliver good, "long" articles. I heard that there's a website who pays $5 for 500 word article but I can't remember the name. Anyway, you can get more money out of your writing skills by working at any freelance outsourcing sites.

In my personal experience and opinion, you sometimes have to start small to work your way up to making decent money. You have to prove that you are good enough for a person to hire you, and therefore, sometimes you need to take less in the beginning to make more.

go for the high quality high price niche, but you'll need a nice portfolio and decent looking site and testimonials

Selling your stuff on WF is about the worst thing you could do if you want to sell your stuff at high rates - you got people there who will go out of their way to get a free copy of a $7 ebook - you think they are going to pay you that much for an article? I'd recommend you pick a niche in a kind of writing, then create a package about why you are great at it, and others suck - and RAISE YOUR PRICES.

An example - "SEO - why you're LOSING MONEY if you pick the wrong writer." In it go over 5 common SEO mistakes people make - and why you don't make them. It builds up your authority AND your marketing is something people will actually learn something with.

    Hope this helps
