There are people on odesk who will work for that price. People here on BHW should NEVER work for that price.

Seriously, a sticky should be added to the section alerting buyers as to the recommended rates they should be offering to pay for articles, based on the preponderance of deals done in this section. The standard MINIMUM rate is $1 per 100 words---and some writers here feel even that is too low.

Plus, for a new member with under 25 posts to make high demands on the work ("gimme a thousand aritcles with 1000% uniqueness by later today" syndrome), when we don't even know from their rep at this point if they will even pay, is amazing.

Are you for real? $1 for 500-600 words? I'm not even sure that freelancers from third world countries would accept to write for such kind of rates. Even if you will find a person agreeing to write for you for such low rates, I'm not sure how unique and readable that content is going to be.
