I am having much confusion regarding articles please shed some light on the subject!

OK i totally understand about using articles to create backlinks, but what im confused about is using articles to earn $$ without a site.
I understand that some places pay you for your articles, When writing for these places are you still writing a article about a product you would like to promote, and include your link in there somewhere?
Can i submit a article, Spin it and submit to another place?
Or is it better to write a article and blast to as many free places as possible?
One last question, can someone please share what a good article should look like?

Get some .info domains.
Redirect them to your affiliate links.
Write quality articles that will force your users to click on your link in resource box. Don't forget to add a link to your domain with some tempting anchor text.
Submit to as many directories as you want.

Or... just setup a free hubpage, squidoo lens...etc with your affiliate link there. Then, write articles, blast them to article directories linking back to that web 2.0 property.

I have never made a lens or a hub page, First time for everything!
I had a blog started that was on first page of google, then i learned why free hosting is useless, so i wanted to start something diffrent maybe this will work for me. Thanks for the advice!
