I'm thinking of a niche with a lot of long tail keywords and very low competition,

I'm thinking to build an adsens targeted authority site with that.

Is it a good idea?

Maybe you could post some stats (Exact Search / month , CPC, SEOC).

You also should manually check the first 2 pages on google for every keyword to see if you have any solid competition (from another mns for example)

The idea is good but it may not work for you if you have very solid competition especial EMD with good backlink and keyword rich content.

it's basically what I'm doing at the moment.. So I would say yes, good idea
