So I have a shopify site. I was ranking #16 for a keyword (brand we were building), for a couple days dancing between 14-20. Now all of the sudden, the root directory has been completely delisted, while other pages still rank (some even went up). Eg: www, mykeyword, com is our domain, and when searching "mykeyword" we are now completely gone from googles serps. www,mykeyword,com/whatever however has stayed or raised. I haven't done any seo really, other than basic on page, and a few basic backlinks, certainly nothing blackhat enough to completely delist it. Any ideas? Is there a way I can figure out why this happened?

Also, no manual actions in search console. Searching for a keyword we ranked #1 in now only shows other pages on our site at #1, where the root used to be #1. It looks like mykeyword, com has been completely delisted. Only way I can get it to come up is if I do site:mykeyword, com

Lately, whenever I have seen someone getting homepage dropped from Serps, it meant a penalty. Especially if it was a ranked KW. Manual actions take a few days to appear in GWT, so check it periodically and let us know in a few days.

Thanks, will do.

Is your page has high flow of outgoing links? If yes, then probably its a manual action penalty it will appear soon in GWT.

Or, may be its just a glitch it will reappear in the SERP's within a few days. See Google SERP's are going crazy a lot lately.

I have almost no outbound links. Just one that links to a study.
The site is pretty fresh with little content.

If you can provide us the site then we can help you.

Yeh, providing a user with 15 posts and barely a year old account with your website, is an absolutely amazing idea.

Duplicate content can delist a home page. If you have a internal page with exact contents of the home page, one of them will get chosen

Also if you have any 301 redirects to this home page, AND this is a new domain, the old domain can run over the new domain. This is a big problem that Google can't seem to solve. I see 301's from years ago show up sometimes on the SERPs (legit ones from when a site truly moved). Shows the old domain not the new, even years later. The page on the new domain is gone. Can happen to the home page too.

Another issue is that shopify is a CNAME for your domain. Your domain is NOT considered yourbrand . com because in reality it points to yadda-yadda-12345.shopify.com or something like that.

What are the contents of your homepage. Is it only a landing page or content overviews are also present?

No duplicate content. I have a single home page. If there were another version somewhere, it doesnt show at all in the serps.

The only thing I can think of is the shopify redirect. But then, why do my other pages still rank?

There is an image with text, a c2a, featured products, an embedded video, and thats it.

Have you tried searching your site's homepage like this 'site:mydomain.com' ?

Give it a few weeks to stabilize. If you continue off the grid then you may start to worry.

So the website we are coming from (just a shopify site with no domain, and unrelated to this one, it's owned by different accounts and everything) which used to rank page 1 for every keyword for a few months, also jumped down to page 5. Could this be negative SEO from competition?

In my own expierence a clear sign of too much linkbuilding, which does not necessarly mean to have happened shortly before. It may happen just with a small change in algo of G. The search engine just gets the impression, "too much has been done". Typically too many links to Homepage, and/or keywords in the links. Happened to me on 3 or 4 sites, no message in webmastertools in all cases. After a few weeks it may come back, but also can be left out for months and years.

G. is like a diva, if you approach this diva in a bit wrong way she lets kiss you her ass.

Thing is I did almost NO link building. A couple social media posts, and like 2 links from other pages online.

Rarely this happens, if there's no manual action, just simply drop your homepage in a couple indexer services and it will come back, likely to the same rank it was beforehand.
