Does having links from no-follow sites/blogs help you climb serps or no?

In all my experience, nofollow links do not affect SERPs.
D0follow links are so plentiful that I would advise you not to take the risk on spending time to create nofollow links.
Others believe differently on this score but as far as I am concerned, it's in Google's best interests to ignore the nofollow tag, which is designed to highlight untrustworthy or user generated links.

Some people perceive them to work, as their rankings have increased whilst using them - which I've also experienced. Some people's perceptions are the opposite - being that they've tried, and failed, to see any effects from the links. It could be that the no-follow backlinks they tried to make weren't of the same quality as the do-dollow ones, or that you need hundreds of no-follow to make up a few do-follow; who knows. Nobody can give you an answer to this, as there is none.
Your best bet is to use them if you have time, and you'll see for yourself whether or not they're effective.

Not much to add to these quality observations other than the fact in my view there are some exceptions to the n0 follow rules and that applies to a limited number of authoritive domains which for reasons unknown do provide a good deal of link power - think wikipedia, big players in the market if your lucky enough to get one you will know what I mean...

Yup. Do-follow links are more powerful, that doesnt means that no-follow links are not powerful. You can easily scrap 1000 no-follow in a single day. May be that is the reason why google made like no value for no-follow links. But really to say people have made big rankings with no-follow links itself.
