Sorry for the noob question but why you are looking for only smpt email service? GMail offers POP/SMTP/IMAP access to its email and is extremely fast and reliable. Also Gmail offers the best Anti-Spam filter of all tested solutions.
SMS alert service can be done via API's provided by the gateway providers but you have to buy the sms credits... there are couple of good once out there i.e clickatel and
