The method I use with my accounts is very simple and free... I simply google different providers and get them to send me free sim cards, throw them in the phone and then send a text through to them. Easily done

O2 sims are here - hxxp://freesim.o2.co*uk/ for the uk

Not sure about other countries though. Also you can get SMS recieved to your account at hxxp://www*voipfone*co*uk which is another one that i have used as they give u free numbers and u just get the sms sent there.
