Just stating that I don't think it's the dup content issue.. Probably other issues and sandbox filters put in place.

I've been doing articles for a few months, and pretty much the common wisdom is to be sure to put your article on your site first. Even allow it a week or so to settle in.
And its probably best - although it can be a pain - to rewrite the same article before submitting it to directories. Just make sure you tag it right so it comes back to your site.
If you are re-writing other peoples articles make sure to do a massive re-write, or the search engines will pick up on similarities to earlier published articles.
Doing the article thing to drive traffic back to your site isn't as fast and easy as it was a couple of years ago. But one thing seems pretty much for certain now;
