How hard is it to set up a personal server?

How hard and expensive would it be to setup a Personal dedicated server at my house. Im hopeing to use it for about 100 websites, and how much would it cost?

I've built a couple of hundred server units over the years of all types. They can come down as low as the price of a personaly computer conversion to a personal server, vs. thousands for custom private servers, up to millions with data networks. Obviously, you will be looking at the smaller units. I recommend getting a small server pre-built and used off of ebay for your needs, because you can get a starter server for less than $200, as building one and loading it would probably cost you twice that if you built it knew...and that's if you have a clue as to what you are doing.

Most people waste a lot of time and effort making virtual servers out of their own home pc, which I don't recommend unless you are just completely unable to afford anything else.

You can make proxies with this server - they will all show your IP though.

I wonder if I could find some warehouse or something in costa rica that would allow me to pay them to put my server in there building.

Why not just rent a server! then the power, bandwidth, hardware etc. aren't your problem!

Yeah exactly, especially the bandwidth.

@OP - Think of an analogy like comparing the data bandwidth to water service from the water utility companies. If you connect through your own residential IP connection, it will be like hooking up through one of the 1/2" water faucets in your house. If you rent from the professionals, they're hooked up to directly into the water mains. Open your water valve all the way and you can fill a swimming pool in abuot 12 hours, the professionals have enough flow to fill it in about 5 minutes.

If you just want some little hobby sites so you can learn about how servers work, and what it takes to maintain them, then it's not a bad idea. If you want to really use them and get serious traffic coming through it, you'll run into problems. Remember all the fiberoptics, and other technology that is so critical to handling the huge amount of data on the internet, ends about a mile or so from your house.

I understand what you mean, But offshore servers are very pricy.
Im not doing anything WAY illegal, But some of my stuff will be very grey hat and some stuff worse, like xrumer..

And I also want my own server to do some of my personal website hobby stuff.

If you want to go that route, there are a ton of services out there for less than $100/month that will set you up on remote access with your own server. They will contract you in most cases for at least 6 months though, to pay for the equip. investment.

Which is an even better reason to NOT do it at your home. The internet may seem to be anonymous, but everything can be traced to a source. If you are pushing the line at all then the more dificulty you can make between the source and you, the better. For some things just simple proxies are good enough, for others you might want to actually never want any connection to you at all. For example, you can get prepaid credit cards and prepaid cell phones that can be used without providing your true identity, that is the only way to completely isolate yourself completely from whatever your going to do.

For what your describing, you probably don't need to go that far, but it gives you something to think about if you need to. Even offshore hosting probably isn't necessary for you. Just seach for hosting companies that will allow the type of sites your planning and then shop for the best price. You may not even need a dedicated server, vps might do everything you need it to do. Even shared hosting might be good enough. There are a lot of people doing some VERY blackhat stuff on shared hosting accounts. Again you just need to search for and find the right ones. Hostgator and the like aren't the only ones out there.

Do you really need dedicated? Could you not use a VPS? if not, why? You can get some really cheap offshore VPS now.

I don't understand why you want the server physically in your house.
A VPS from a hosting provider with VNC set up on it will give you the exact same experience as a server next to you.

You can get a VPS for $15 a month.

Bandwidth is the biggest problem with a home connection. It's pretty much non-existent. Most home connections don't even hit 512kbps upload speeds.

sorry if this is a stupid questions but will I be able to make multiple ip's with that vpn? and can I use it for xrumer?

It just depends on the host you choose, but for the most part the answer to both is 'yes'.

That's true in most cases. All of my properties are hosted elsewhere from my personal servers. I only use the servers in my home network for my private database system, R & D and easy testing.

No joke the amount of money you would save a month in power alone would justify a VPS really the only reason to run a server out of your home would be for R & D like aftershock2020 is doing. I have a test server at my work and I use it just for that and small office backups. I don't pay for the power if I did I would not be running it 24/7.

Allow my to post my opinion: Before starting your own server, you really should increase your knowledge. Don't start right now, read first in wikipedia, BHW etc about the stuff. You have really no idea and you must learn more, otherwise you will 100% fail.
