A few weeks ago I shared a post here about how I felt after quitting SEO and IM for 3 months. Yes, as I said it has a dramatic effect when leaving this "burden" (for me it is). I have completely changed the outlook on my life... GOALS maan, Goals)) I started to realize really clearly what I wanted)
A lot of you (I also was) "blinded" by this SEO bubble which they suppose will bring the money after "xxx" time and will continue to do so many months. Months pass, years pass, and their site doesn't move a needle, or other problmes occurs, or it even conquers the top, but after 1-2 months its now back to 100+ position and you need to start all over again.) What we get at the end? You lost x months (or even worse .. years) on the stuff which noone on the earth know how it works. You were "preoccupied" with it every day and invested your precious time to this stupid thing) It kept you captive.

Lets clarify some things about SEO now:

1) currently SEO depends on "luck"
I ve seen countless of people, they buy the most expensive backlinks, the most high quality contents and stuff, they do all the things which most of the "gurus" advice, but they are nowhere to be seen on SERPS after months, years. It is 90% LUCK now.

2) SEO is not Sustainable
Suppose you somehow conquered the top spots now, you are now comforted by the xx amount of money that you make and have long term goals with this project. but BAAM!, google update slaps your a** and you are now dropped to 100+ positions and have to start from ZERO again, or spend countless nights to "revive" this project.

3) SEO doesn't bring me satisfaction.
Yes, maybe thats personally me, but deep inside I think I don't contibute something to the society while messing with this "tricking robot algorithms". All of us are here for the money, but the process of earning money should also bring satisfaction.

4) SEO is not "PASSIVE" Income
SEO will absorb your thoughts and make you a "slave"
Yes, no matter if you make money , or waiting your projects to rank, all of your thoughts will be preoccupied with your SEO projects. You will be worried of your positions and other stuff every day.
Suppose this is as a "cloud" like system, which throws intrusive thoughts at you. You lose your life interests and hobbies. Suppose there is a nice weather and there are some social events which you wanted to visit someday: some voice says you "oh, you have to buy those backlinks today for your that project, or you have to "make analysis" of how recent changes affected your positions, or other BS" and you gave up on this idea and stayed in your 4 walls)
You go on a date with a new girl, and have to impress her with nice conversations, and flirt: - You seem boring, cause nothing comes to your mind and fail the date, simply cause you have no interests outside of that SEO stuff in your mind
- Her interests: literature, music, art, sports, films ... other stuff which normal girls intersted
- Your interests : backlinks, algorithms, "random SEO stuff".
Girls consider you "weird", and you are different to 99% of them, cause you live in another world.

most of the time, SEO nerd won't even be interested in meeting women, and postpone every actions, cause:
You have to become rich first, so the girls love you !

To be honest I had such mindset too) :D, I considered that girls sleep only with "rich" men and you have to be that rich first.
What a BS that was ) Girls sleep with ordinary guys, even, when they meet "rich" guy, they expect them to give expensive presents and spend big bucks, just because he is rich) While at the same time sleeping with ordinary guys for nothing (cause you have your $hit together and you know how to impress them, while your mind is not infected with "SEO BS thoughts")

After leaving this "bubble" 3-4 months ago, I started finally "to live", and take steps to my development. Became more disciplined, started sports excercises every other day. Started to meet with women and got back my interests, and started to gain pleasure from right things.
I still work 9 to 5 on a not stressful job though.

While I gave up on SEO, I didn't gave up on the idea of "passive income" still, I still think thats possible. Thats why I am searching for the next thing which will bring satisfaction and be a source of true passive income.
Clean PASSIVE Income, is something like a renting a Real Estate, now that doesn't make you a slave and you only get your paycheck every monnth.

I know that we can't replicate some source like that, but what comes to my mind?
I have some skills in python, I am thinking to excel it and create a SAAS and advertise it through ads. I enjoy devising new things (this is not "messing with robot algorithms :D" and you are not dependent on some "wooden heads" from Google which control the SEO results.

What other options are there?

OP makes sense. There are times when It feels like Im a slave to algorithms and I'm trying to direct human traffic in one direction as per how search engine wants me to work.

Real Estate requires massive amounts of capital up front to just start.

SEO is a lot cheaper and there are plenty of legit ways to make money from zero. Just have to take a look at some of the journey threads to see its possible.

Maybe a break will do you some good though (as you've clearly stated). Time away may give you time to reset and get creative again.

I've liked your essay. I share a ton of things with you. But now it's time you are deceived with your startup entrepreneurship idea, which will be even worse than your SEO career. From a coding part, competing with this amazing Indian programmers is terrible. There are millions literally (1 million estimated I read in a recent report), that will, not only program faster, but copy your product as soon as it is slightly successful and garnish it with a hundred extra features. So don't be fooled: SEO, SAAS, CPA, or whatever IM is extremely hard by definition and unless you have the skill to get a competitive edge on any of these disciplines, you will be all the time behind the cart suffering the same issue you have mentioned.

I also feel like you when it comes to SEO. I don't like it at all, I'm more into affiliate campaigns running ads, but it happens that sometimes SEO could be an extra punch in traffic if you know how to do it fast and furiously (it's not passive and it's not stable, but it works and its not expensive for certain very specific type of affiliate campaigns that cannot be done over other regular traffic sources). SEO can be very mechanic, procedural and very cold overall, like mathematics in some degree. Not all brains are meant to play this game and this is why, SEO feels like a lure for many, but most end leaving soon. If you felt this way, this is the better option you have chosen. If there was another interesting option I could recommend you, trust me, I would be in that option. But there doesn't seem to be many great options when it comes to IM. If you decide to go as a service provider like most marketplace threads, it would be even more awful: doing the same thing over and over again is terrible for me, and I admire those guys selling those link packs with any automation software, because everytime I open one of those automation software I just want to cry like a baby

Yeah, thanks for your input. There is also an idea to learn python and advertise software solutions to businesses (b2b) (there are many businesses, like some small factories which are in need of client programs and stuff) , or even it may be possible to outsource it and take your %. I know some local guys in my country who make tons of cash that way.

The stress & struggles that comes with business isn't for everyone, you just have to accept that & continue your journey to find your calling, I hope all the best for you brother !

delegation of authority is what will bring you piece and feeling of empowerment , but then you better be a good manager of people and projects if you hate doing ground level tasks.

If you still want a passive income and don't have something you're still looking, then you describe a false dichotomy. As your always going to be thinking of your passive income building no matter what. When you are an entrepreneur and if that's what you really are, then you'll only be preoccupied with the thoughts about work to the degree you're not disciplined to make time for the other important things in life. Apart from that, till you have passive income paying your expenditures, then you'll always be on the treadmill, and thinking about it. If the result is your going to say you want to retire from SEO, when even saas and almost every type of income rely on SEO to a degree. Hack I have a t-shirt merch income channel, and that is passive income and requires SEO in the description title and tags. lol

Also real estate is a be on call 24 hours for problem type of business. When I say that, it doesn't fit well with what you describe, as wanting to live stress-free. Real estate is for people wanting to park their business money into save investments. Too many people think they are hands off way to making millions. lol kinda like you did with SEO! You better watch you don't see a deja vu matrix cat! :)
