Hello guys and gals, I need some advice. I keep looking at lists of popular niches in 2023 for ideas. These lists are very general and do not give very specific niche topics -- they are just search results from Google. After that, I fall off the deep end because I don't know how to proceed. So, I'm stuck!

What can I do to find more targeted niches, especially ones that are worth doing SEO on? Reddit, Quora? SemRush, Ahrefs?

If you find an easy answer to this then you've found the golden ticket. If you're prepared to spend some time on things, you can start with these broad niches, and use a method similar to the one described by @paraztos here: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/how-to-do-keyword-research-for-free.1380646/
identifying more focused parts of the niche by looking at what keywords are being searched for that have low competition.

If you don't want to spend time, @Holzr has a gig that provides low competition keywords in a variety of niches already researched for you: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/forum-keywords-find-user-generated-keywords.1484050/

Back in the day when I first joined people tended to say "Choose a niche you love or know" and I personally think that's terrible advice.

Just find whatever is easy to do (EASY ENOUGH) and stick to it. Any low-comp niche does the trick.

For pinpointing specific, SEO-worthy niches, consider combining keyword research tools like SemRush or Ahrefs with community platforms like Reddit and Quora to uncover untapped, relevant topics with user engagement potential.

Do you prefer to work with niches that are connected to your real life or do you just need to find any niche?

Like if you are an electrical engineer you may dive deep into the topics and find a very specific category to write about. Or, you can use various AI tools to generate ideas for you in any evergreen niche.

With this approach, you don't actually look for keywords. Instead you work with individual topics and questions that needs to answered.

For example, I shared a ChatGPT method which works great for me -
