This seems true about my own
SEO project (about building 171 anchored text backlinks in a seven hour has negative impact on the ranking) on 10th June 2008 but today (12th June 2008) when Google updates my site, it achieved good result. Now my site is ranked 6th on google for the 1st keywords and 28th for the 2nd keywords.
Since the foundation is being built, it makes much easier for Robert to achieve the target. I have emailed Robert to revise the number of days needed to achieve number 1 position.

I am now using another method of optimizing for the search terms he wants. And I have asked him to stop link building for these terms. As it stands, his indexed positions for these terms have been sliding down as they should be in Google's reaction to attempting to game their SE.
If you read my post above where I explain in detail why it takes 10 days not 1 to index the top position, you'll see it's not a case of mass link building alone which accomplishes the top spots.
