Yes, as long as your giving very precise concentrated answers to the search query.
This is something I'm testing on a new website, where each post will only be 100 words long. I'm calling it "snippet snipping", and am targeting 0 allintitle, 7+ word long tail questions that make sense, rather than using m/s data.

IF...
1) your site is authoritative (3+ years old... gets 1000s of unique visitors per day from google and/or social media... has 30+ DA, but preferably 60+ DA... already ranks at #1 for dozens of keywords which pull 10s of 1000s of visitors per month in total);
2) your content is good (your visitors read it and then click on any other link on your website)
3) google doesn't have other relevant piece of content to display in the SERPs....
If any, or all of these are true then you will rank for shorter articles, with or without backlinks.

3 Articles per day is not a necessary thing. Concentrate on 1 article per day choose trendy and useful topic for your niche related and create piece of content with useful information to visitors. It will more help to get visitors to your site, So automatically your site your content also get ranking in google.

If you post much more words and quality content you'll get better ranking and visitors.

can you share the characteristics of the top 3 sites for the primary keyword that you are writing about? for example, number of words for their money page, keyword density, etc.
dont think you can rank if the top 3-5 pages all have pages more than 1500 words and you have 300.

Good keyword research and Quality content is needed for ranking. Length also matters but quality is more important. So, go for quality you will surely see some results.
