FYI - The Socialize piece does have a "phone-home" component that simply checks for a new version on a file stored on amazon. It can easily be commented out, if so desired.

This would be a useful tool outside of wordpress. Should be able to convert it to be standalone - or at least learn the code to be able to write your own.
